Jonathan Jones @jjones9 · Follow Breaking: The 2024 NFL salary cap is set for a whopping, record-breaking $255.4 million, sources tell @CBSSports. That's up more than $30 million from last year's cap number and well beyond all the recent estimates. Story to come.
Calm your titties Karens.

New Orleans was around $80 million over the cap before this increase. They had already begun their annual contract restructures, with the restructuring of center Eric McCoy’s and quarterback Derek Carr’s. The cap strategy under General Manager Mickey Loomis for the Saints has traditionally been to push the money down the road, with the expectation that the cap will be increasing each season. Covid-19 put a pause on that, as it caused the growth to stagnate, eventually leading to the 2021 season, where the cap actually went down by $16 million. The Saints should now be somewhere in the realm of $40 million over the cap, significantly shortening the amount of moves that the front office and GM Mickey Loomis would have to make to get compliant.
Edit - just saw below thread.

We got an extra 15 mill in cap than was expected. Basically meaning the opposite.

I doubt that stops Loomis from front-loading deals and kicking the can down the road like he always does.

If this were true, we shouldn't have restructured Carr. At least for the full base salary.

If?
The cap was expected to be $240 mill, and its $255 mill. Thats about 15million more than was expected.
There is no if about it, this is FACT.

Having more money to play with doesn't mean the poor spending of it has less consequence.
I'm glad we have more money. But so does 31 other teams. If they are spending it more wisely what does it benefit us in the end?

I don’t understand how some of you aren’t getting this. People aren’t freaking out that we can’t get under the cap
1. People don’t like how we do it
2. What is the purpose of continually punting? What are we extending? Kicking the can to keep freeing up just enough cap space to sign your rookies and a few middling FAs serves what purpose ? You’re fighting keep an aging core together that hasn’t made the playoffs in 3 years in a crappy division.
Questioning WTF we’re doing here doesn’t make you a Karen. It’s astounding some of you can look at the results and keep defending this strategy

Its actually pretty clear what we’re doing and our strategy.
I think most on here are tired of arguing with you Karens. Keep pretending like we’re a crap franchis if you want. Some folks cant appreciate nice things.

Tampa Bay has won the division three years in a row. They even started a reset last season and won a playoff game.
Yeah, what we've been doing just isn't good enough.

People act like unused cap doesn’t roll into the next year. You create the cap and spend what you deem worthy.

I mean we can't even keep good, productive players on reasonable deals. We lost Ellis and Onyemata just last year. Sure you can say a Marcus Williams was too expensive, but these guys weren't.
How is creating a cap situation where you can't keep young players you develop, this +EV strategy?

We missed the playoffs 3 years in a row. That's not nice

NFL teams dont make the playoffs every year. Please exercise common sense.
All of the best teams still miss the playoffs regularly. Drew Brees/saints missed playoffs two/three years in a row more than once.
Most playoffs ever made by a franchise is 36 of 58 SuperBowls. Which means the two top teams (re:made playoffs) in NFL history missed the playoffs often.
The packers/cowboys have the lead with 36 playoff appearances out of 58 SuperBowls played.
The patriots who just finished having a dynasty made 28 playoffs of 58 SuperBowl season.
You are dumb and have unrealistic expectations.
But you are a whiny Karen, so go figure.

I said 3 years.
We are pretending that the Saints are in "win now" mode with our cap strategy, but we're not winning.
Again, to ask J's question: what is the point of playing the roster construction game with one arm tied behind our backs if we aren't winning? What is our strategy, exactly?
quote:
You are dumb and have unrealistic expectations.
Making the playoffs with the easiest schedule and the shittiest division while our GM pretends we are in "win now" mode is unrealistic, how?
How is it unrealistic to expect us to win a division with 2 of the worst teams in the NFL and a rebuilding Bucs squad?

You can't even articulate a rational strategy that you referenced yourself

Right, when they don’t they should be building towards that goal building for the future. The Saints have the one of the oldest and most expensive rosters in the league. The management acts like they are in win now mode.

My expectations are for rhe front office to field a team capable of competing for the championship or build towards that goal. There is nothing unrealistic about being disappointed if the team is mediocre and stuck in the mud.

Derp. How does that have any meaning to you in your brain?
Again, nfl teams dont make the playoffs every year. Or three years.
Here you going being dumb again Karen. Perfect example of what a waste of time explaining anything to you is.
The patriots have made 24 of 58 total SBowl playoffs.
Meaning they missed the playoffs 34 times.
Cowboys/packers are tops with 36 meaning they missed the playoffs 22 times.
Chicken littles unite to cry and be Karens. Wahh.

Youre expectations are written in crayon on construction paper. Youre just a little baby Karen. Wahhh. You dont have the brain power to evaluate what the Saints are doing or reason to see that it works, or how it will work.
Im thrilled about the new offensive Coaching staff.
But go ahead and predict that we lose. You’ll probably be happy if we do.
