Correct me if I am seeing this wrong, but it looks like the saints can finally move out of cap hell after the 2022 season. Make no mistake that this organization is in deep doo with not a whole lot of options.

Brees accounts for $12 mil of the cap space and after that it looks like the top 10 players are where the real cap problems are. Trading or releasing those top players create a higher cap hit.

I would hate to see the saints have to continue kicking the cap down the road, but how do they get out of it this coming year? My suspicion is that this is why Payton resigned. He saw how bad 2021 went and 2022 is going to be worse. Poor DA is inheriting the ruins of a great run.

no you arent wrong, but its wrong in that you arent accounting for $40m that will go to whatever washed up rehab QB DA brings in here

they can be free of the cap easily but they have new expenses not yet on the books such as the QB and draft picks

It is the only way for them to get out of the cap hell. They cannot start the season over the cap, or the NFL has the ability to step in and release players to force the team under. As a result, you are looking at cuts and/or extensions in order to get under the cap this year. In order to do that, you will be putting some of this $$$ on future caps. Then, on top of that you still need to sign more players to fill the roster.

Also, when looking at the 2023 cap, you also have to factor in that the team only has ~30 players under contract for 2023.

This is true, but you also have to look at the fact that Armstead, Winston & Tre'Quan count for a combined $17M and are technically FAs due to the voidable years ML adds to the backend of contracts to spread cap hits.

The team also has 4 players (Latt, MT, Cam, Ram) that count for almost 50% of the 2022 cap. They need their contracts adjusted/extended

Pretty sure every single person knows that next year is a rebuild year, which isn't all doom and gloom and we can still EASILY win the division with what/who we currently have.

EVERY SINGLE TEAM in the NFC South is in the exact same boat, UNLESS Brady comes back. None of the 4 teams have their franchise QB at this moment. Every team is going to need to draft one or entice one as a free agent over the next 2 years. Our goal should be to go 0-17 and end up with the #1 pick for next year, because which ever team lands the best QB is going to run that division for a few years.

Every year people ring the sirens about how up against the wall the saints are with cap space. Every year we adjust extend and get out of it with the ability to sign some good free agents. This is been a constant for the last 12 years. We good, ML is the best cap manipulator in the NFL.

That's fine. But imagine what mickey can do with actual real cap space again. Your victory in shoving shite to tomorrow gets us by but we're not out of cap hell. And yes, we lost Hendrickson, Rankins, Sanders, and few others past few years due to cap issues. It is affecting us.

...which means he will get a Top 5 2023 draft pick, and Payton decides to return.

Yes, but the fans will still blame him for a losing season as they celebrate a top 5 pick.

Saints are not in "cap hell". ML utilizes the cap to the max allowable when all the rules are manipulated.

Bottom dwellers rarely are successful by getting #1 picks, Joe Burrow is the outlier here.

“Kicking the can down the road” implies at some
Point the saints will have to stop and face the music. But… there is no reason for them to do that. Just keep kicking indefinitely.

The team needs to be blown up and rebuilt. If that doesn’t happen retirements and free agency will gut the roster.
