So they are thinking that the cap will be around 175 Million next year. The saints currently have 250 Million on the books. No matter how good Loomis is I don't see a way for them to shed 75 Million.

Obviously the cap drop is unexpected and every team is going to be hurt badly by it. I kind of expect the NFL to make some type of exception for teams next year to go over the cap. The product would be hurt pretty badly if they didn't. Just curious what others thoughts on this is.

Over that cap has us at $247,000,000 with the projected cap at $175,000,000.

However I see a lot of ways to drop
Extend Brees one or two years to push his salary out (could save $25m+)
Resign Lattimore and Ram.
Resign Davis
A few cuts will be needed
Easton
Possibly Armstead if he plays less than 13 games this year

There are moves that can be made.

So let’s say we resign lattimore and ram. Ram is going to get 10-15. Let’s go on the low end and say 10. Lattimore is going to get 15-20. Let’s go on the low end again and say 15. That puts us 100 mill over the cap if we signed both to lower end contracts. There is no way to cut all that without completely destroying the team.

I personally think the nfl would make an exception if this was the chiefs or patriots in that spot. I’m not convinced they would make one for the saints. Hopefully a lot more teams end up in this position

That is not how it works.

With signing bonuses you can lower the front end cap hit.

I’ve posted this numerous times already. Brees is done and they need to eat that 22 mill so they can get to a better place in the future. The saints will restructure Thomas, Jordan, Peat and turning most of their salaries into signing bonuses. Easton will be cut, Janoris Jenkins may be extended and or cut, Armstead imo is gone (Imo Ram will be the LT Of the future). Then they will extend Lattimore and Ram lowering their cap hit. Those moves alone get us where we need to be.

This requires him to not retire. I think that's at best about 50/50.

Resign Lattimore and Ram.

These would technically be extensions since they are already signed. They could go from costing us about $21 mil in cap to maybe around $4-8 mil depending on how creative Loomis gets with future years.

So that would shave at least $10 mil off the cap (but likely more), and despite the people crying over Kamara and not being able to keep both, it is actually imperative to extend both to save cap.

So the one's crying about Kamara and cap room have no idea how it actually works.

Resign Davis

Being that he'll be FA and not on the books next year, this will actually cost cap. So in addition to whatever we need to do just to get under the cap, we have to carve out at least $2-4 mil more for him.

Where we will save the most is converting a few base salaries into signing bonuses. I haven't looked at who saves what, but I imagine Jordan, Thomas, and Armstead will save us quite a bit.

And then some guys like Easton and PRob will be on the chopping block.

The bigger issue next year was never extending Ram and Latt (because as said this actually NEEDS to get done to SAVE cap), but whether we can or even want to resign Anzalone, Rankins, and/or Marcus Williams. All 3 are FAs and we'll need to carve out another $2-4 mil each if we want to keep them long term.

So it's going to take some doing, but the following gets us $8 mil under the projected cap (not counting Kamara since his full breakdown isn't out yet so this will need to be adjusted):

Brees retires.

Easton and PRob cut.

Ram and Latt extending and counting only $4 mil each on the cap (as opposed to the original $21 mil combined).

Max possible restructures on Jordan, Thomas, Armstead, Hill, J. Jenkins, Peat, Onyemata, and M. Jenkins.

There's some other possible savings to be had, but this is the most likely scenario for these guys. If Brees doesn't retire we can spread his hit out a different way.

But from starting at a projected $75 mil over it's pretty amazing this is all it took to get under.

Loomis knows what he's doing otherwise he wouldn't have so much faith that it'll work
