I don't understand what this means. He didn't feel up to playing?

I mean, can we all just admit that this is not normal? Guys his age and talent don't need 'rest' games every 4-5 games. He's not hurt, right? I don't get why he would need days off or why this would be a thing..

They probably talked, asked Zion how he was doing physically, Zion told them he had a couple of spots he was hurting, team decided to rest him.

I'd guess that's the most likely scenario of how it played out.

Right. They asked what his fatigue level was, muscle tightness etc.

He told them and they held him out for rest.

They are specifically trying to avoid what happened with the hamstring last year.

I hate it, but it is what it is.

It doesn't matter if it's the team or Zions team making the decision, it's the wrong approach. People are acting like we have a two game sample size of this way of treating him. He's been babied for 4+ years now. I'm not sure why people don't want the training wheels taken off of him.

If you're a fan and want Zion to rest and think he shouldn't play b2b's at home, fine. But you cannot say he should rest and he needs to get in shape or that Zion and BI need to work on chemistry, because those two things do not go together, they work against each other. Sitting on the bench does not get you in game shape and resting one of your top two players on the rare occasions they are both healthy does not help team chemistry. This approach isn't doing your team or Zion any favors. Everyone should already know that.

IN fairness, we did exactly that last season in December when we were rolling. Then Zion blew a hammy in his 3rd game in 4 days, which is a soft tissue injury or whatever it's called, that is known to be exacerbated or increased injury rate due to fatigue or being stressed physically.

I don't like it either but with Zion, we're screwed either way for the most part. Stinks that our 23 year old dude can't just go out and play every game. Then if you play him every game and rely on him heavily when the rest of the team is injured, then he gets hurt again from the fatigue and stress on his body from carrying the team.

It's not back to backs though. It has very specifically been done to avoid 3 games in 4 nights. That is a high workload with minimal time for recovery.

This

And again, I don't think anyone loves this plan. Yes, your 23 year old star should't have to sit games like this, but ours does. That's just how it goes with Zion unfortunately.

Let's be really honest, Zion has a clause in his contract for being at a certain BMI or body fat % or whatever.

He comes into preseason and he's not physically in the shape the organization wants.

"Zion, you're too big. We're gonna hold you out of the b2bs that have you playing 3 games in 4 days. Eventually I'm sure you'll play your way into shape, but we need to change what we've done with you in the past. We want you to get to 65+ games this year. You cool with this?"

"Yeah I agree, I'm not in the shape I should be in. Let's do it"

Some version of that conversation took place. And the org is poorly putting lipstick on it to make it seem ok to us.

We dump millions into sports performance; the guy should not be sitting for every sore and tight muscle, every soft tissue boo boo, fatigue etc. That’s scary if that is the case

Unless they are just playing the numbers, less games = less chance of an acute injury. Which is still pathetic to have to do at this juncture of his career

We literally hired a physical therapist for the first time in franchise history this year. Pels aren’t literally ahead of the curve when it comes to sports performance.

Come on man, stop. Pels are not ahead of the curve because they hired a physical therapist. NFL teams have been required to keep one for years and NBA teams have had them for decades. If we hired one for the first time EVER, we are way behind the curve.

Couldn’t tell ya if they are ahead of the curve without knowing what the 29 teams have and do

I know they have a renovated state of the art facility on airline and a team of 15 or so in their sport performance department. Everything from orthos to internal med to mental health to dietitians to massage therapists to strength and conditioning. This all became a priority under GM David griffin

Stretch him out, massage him, cup him, stim him, give him some ozempic and get his big arse on the floor

Right

Everyone harps on the physical therapist thing insinuating like our players didn't have access to one in the past. They did, it was just contracted out, not one on payroll with the Pels.

Maybe that truly is bad and we're way behind, but who on here knows if the other 29 teams all have a physical therapist actually on staff or work with a local hospital to provide this service?
