a forgone conclusion you cannot bring these guys back next year. We aren't a good team this year

And weren't good last year but for about a month.

Same time, ownership has been pushing fast track since they took over. Not sure much has happened to change their mindset.

Gentry had a quote about a month ago along the lines of "nearing a point of no return." So I think the team has given going a different direction at least a little thought. The problem is the West is so week this year. We only have about 2 weeks left for the FO to figure it out. Portland has a pretty tough schedule in that span, but Jazz should be able to get more wins than us. Hopefully 5 or more out of 8th at the deadline is enough to get the team to pull the trigger.

It all comes down to 1 thing really:
Unless we can move Asik in the process of trading Ryno or Reke, or both and net a bird right FA asset like Mozgov in the process, it's actually better for us to keep Ryno to the offseason. The End.

If we can't land a Batum or Barnes, or we don't end up high enough in the lottery, we resign Ryno. If we do land the SF we want, THEN we sign and trade him. We need to hit that sweet spot of +$20mm in free cap to land anyone that is not Ryno.

Pelicans 2016 Salary Cap / Free Agency:
2 Things I expect to happen: Alonzo Gee opts out, Babbitt’s option not picked up.
On the books for 2016-17: AD23, Jrue, Tyreke, Asik, Ajinca, Qpon, Dante - Projected 2016-17 Cap: $89mm

Not expecting anything for EG at the deadline. Maybe a 2nd round pick during a sign and trade in the offseason, or he just walks.
Situations 1 & 2 are us keeping things intact, making a playoff run. We’d pick outside of the top 5. Simmons, Ingram, Jaylen Brown are gone.
Situations 3 & 4 are tank engaged moves, maybe we end up drafting in the top 3, and draft the SF of the future, so we can sign the 5 we want.

Situation 1: Ryno sign and trade in the offseason.
AD23 Not All-NBA, only 25% cap: $63,536,683
Free Agent/Rookie $: $25,463,317

AD23 All-NBA, 30% cap: $66,568,803
Free Agent/Rookie $: $22,431,197

Situation 2: Ryno staying. $12.75mm cap hold.
AD23 Not All-NBA, only 25% cap, Pre-signing Ryno cap: $76,286,683
Free Agent/Rookie $: $12,713,317

AD23 All-NBA, 30% cap, Pre-signing Ryno cap: $79,318,803
Free Agent/Rookie $: $9,681,197

Situation 3: Ryno traded to move Asik’s contract, for a salary dump/picks.
AD23 Not All-NBA, only 25% cap: $53,632,189
Free Agent/Rookie $: $35,367,811

AD23 All-NBA, 30% cap: $56,664,309
Free Agent/Rookie $: $32,335,691

Situation 4: Ryno traded to move Asik’s contract, yields Timofey Mozgov. Mozgov 2016-17 cap hold: $7,425,000
AD23 All-NBA, 30% cap, Pre-signing Mozgov cap: $64,089,309
Free Agent/Rookie $: $24,910,691

AD23 Not All-NBA, only 25% cap, Pre-signing Mozgov : $61,057,189
Free Agent/Rookie $: $27,942,811

Available premium free agents and their MAX $:
SF:
Kevin Durant: ~$25.3 Million
Nicolas Batum: ~$25.3 Million
Harrison Barnes (RFA): ~$21.0 Million

C:
Hassan Whiteside: ~$21.0 Million
Timofey Mozgov: ~$21.0 Million
Festus Ezeli (RFA): ~$21.0 Million

SG:
DeMar DeRozan: ~$25.3 Million
Bradley Beal (RFA): ~$21.0 Million

So the Pelicans trade an expiring Anderson, Gordon and Cole plus dump the albatross contract of Asik and get back Devin Booker???

The Cavs return for Love is absurd.

Not The End. If you keep Ryno he's not getting a 1 year deal. You just took $15-$20 million out of your 2017 cap space. Turning Ryno into Morris would probably be better than resigning him. At least Morris should be easy enough to flip with his contract if you need the cap space in 2017.

Exactly. IMO, this is the mindset that led us to re-signing Asik this past offseason. "Well we can't afford any better Centers this offseason, so might as well re-sign Asik."

Well you didn't really look it over well enough, or you don't know who Devin Booker is... either way.. you guys do realize that we WILL be maxing someone this offseason, in a 4 year deal, right? Even if it's just Ryno. It will be this offseason, so that the deal lines up with AD23's last season before he can opt out, 2019-20.

We'll know by then if he will be resigning. We'll know by then if we've been winning enough to keep him happy, and extend him. Or we will trade him like we did with CP3, and start over.

In an IDEAL world, we'd move Reke, Asik, and Ryno somehow for expirings and picks, and end up with $42-45mm in cap to max 2 guys of AD23s choosing... right?
Maybe he convinces Dwight and KD to come take less money and give it 4 tries, like those other guys did in Miami...

Or the brass signs two Gentry guys like Festus AND Harrison.... then we'd draft a Buddy Hield or trade the pick for someone like DEVIN BOOKER! ;)

This will be our last big offseason. Even with the continued cap expansions, it's not the max deal this year that is going to handcuff us, it's having to max Jrue following next season, with a weaker FA class at our non-AD/Jrue positions.

If it's a given Dell isn't going to commit 16 mil to Ryan he should trad him to the Raps for their pick and a filler.

I think you don't know Devin Booker. He is one of the most promising young guards in the game. He hit 6 threes the other night. The Suns see him as a building block and we aren't getting him for the trash you offered. The Pelicans aren't going to get a prospect of his caliber for three expirings while also dumping Asik. Try again.

Too bad trades aren't approved unilaterally.

There is only one solution. One of us needs to make $2 billion quickly, and buy the NOLA teams. Fire everybody. Use the board to make all personnel decisions.
