On Defense.

Oleh Kosel @OlehKosel

De'Aaron Fox entered tonight having scored 28 points or more in all his games but one this season. With his night likely done, Pelicans held him to:

14 points
5-18 FG
2-12 3PT
2 rebounds
0 assists
2 turnovers

Dyson Daniels and Herb Jones did the majority of the heavy lifting.

Integrating CJ and Trey back in is going to be tricky. I know we always want more shooting, but Herb and Dyson are a 2 man gang that makes the defense work.

Lineup numbers with Dyson-Herb-BI-Zion-JV:

42 minutes
+37
147.7 O Rating
105.7 D Rating
42.0 Net Rating

42 minutes is a small sample size, but those are video game numbers.

Christian Clark @cclark_13 13h

The Dyson-Herb-Ingram-Zion-Valanciunas starting 5 was a +20 in 13 minutes tonight. Overall, it is a +37 in 42 minutes. So much size. Unfair to have Dyson AND Herb defensively. Pelicans have found something with it.

Clip of Dyson funneling Fox into Herb for the steal.

Steve Kerr moved Igoudala to the bench for a young draymond Green and the warriors dynasty started.

I'm not saying that has to happen with CJ, but it's an interesting thought if this starting unit keeps bludgeoning teams defensively.

Willie would never do that but if you have Dyson and herb set the tone early then cj first off the bench to come in and do his thing with Hawkins and trey when he comes back I mean damn that's some firepower

I can definitely see CJ coming off the bench for a while in his return. He'll be on a minute restriction for a while for sure.

I think running a defensive lineup with Herb and Dyson and switching off to an offensive lineup with Trey and Hawk is extremely fun and intriguing

need to get his early season minutes down anyway. Also…he’s getting older, he’s impossibly wealthy, he’s on his last big deal and he’s never won anything. I don’t think that CJ would object at all to downsizing his responsibilities and increasing his spot use

he will want to do what’s best for the chance to win something

Assuming he is healthy, in what world is CJ coming off the bench or getting his minutes reduced? That just isn't going to happen.

If Willie is going to play Dyson more, it will be at the expense of Jose. Also, Jose is a proven commodity with bonafide playoff skins on the wall. Anyone here think Willie is switching gears because Dyson played a few good games in November? Dyson probably needs to put a couple of good months together, not just a couple of good games together, to cut into Jose's minutes. Is what it is.

I love Jose. Everybody here loves Jose. You're unAmerican if you don't love Jose. But if what we're seeing is Dyson figuring things out and not just a flash in the pan, then Dyson > Jose. That 105 DRtg with BI, Zion and JV as your other 3 players, would be 4 points better than the best defense in the league last year. Dyson may not get the crowd to chant his name, but don't think he's not impactful because he's not as exciting.

I just don’t see how they will go with anything but
CJ
Herb
BI
Zion
Jonas

Injuries, rest, etc will likely take care of a lot of lineup issues but having a 2nd unit where BI and Jonas are resting is
Hawk/Jose
Dyson
Herb
Trey
Zion

This team is loaded with depth and has so many different ways it can beat you. If we can just be mostly healthy we will be hard to beat in a playoff series.

It's just a matter of time before Dyson blows by Jose. Then, he'll gradually get more & more minutes...until suddenly, you look up...and he's out there at "closing time". He's gonna be a VERY solid player...especially when paired with Herb.

Dyson was a tremendous defender last season, but the strength he added in the offseason has taken him to a new level, helping him defend bigger players and improving his rebounding ability.

It's crazy to say this, but I think he's now a better on-ball defender than Herb. Herb is still better off-ball. And Dyson might be the best transition defender in the whole league.

Offensively, the new floater is deadly accurate and his spin move consistently creates open looks. He just needs to be more aggressive. Last night, he passed up some good opportunities because he wanted to keep feeding Zion and BI.

Shooting 33% from 3 isn't great, but it's not terrible. The key thing is that he's letting those shots fly without fear.

His shot has to keep falling though. So far this year Dyson has hit the open 3 and had a great floater to go with the outside shot but he’s going to have to keep knocking them down because we know Jose can. Having Dyson out there though gives us about 5 inches of size over Jose.

This was somewhat addressed in the post game presser by Willie after someone asked him about dyson covering Fox. Herb is great at off ball movement defensively and dyson is also great at getting through a pick and roll. This has been a huge part in JV being able to play better defensively.

Along with an engaged Zion and BI on defense, along with Jonas blocking shots. Let’s not overreact, fun as it may be to think about.

Dyson and Herb can defend the 1-4 (maybe even the 5 in smallball). I think that people are overthinking the minutes for when CJ comes back.

If it's playoff time (or an important regular season game), and we're fully healthy, Jose, Naji, and Hawkins are the ones mostly eating shite on the bench. Jose and Naji will get minutes when we're playing like pussies and need some "dawg" minutes.

Clips of Herb's blocks so far this season. It's kind of crazy how good he is at it.
