The Pelicans biggest issue throughout the first 14 games of the season.

I've watched all 14 games and there are a number of things you could point to when seeing how this team has performed this year, however.
Unforced turnovers have killed this team. Even at the beginning of the season during the winning streak, the team did not take care of the ball.
If the team can clean this up and shrink the turnover margin it will be the difference in a lot of close games as the season goes on.

We are missing EP the most

The turnovers are a problem but they also mailed it in for the first half. When they lock in on defense they can play with anyone. Had they played the first half with as much energy as the second half they’d have won. Points allowed by quarter last night

There’s no excuse for how poorly they played defensively in the first quarter.

I totally agree and that goes for basically every game this season, barring the GS game. It's like they aren't getting "up" for these games and I think you have to put some of the responsibility on the coaches.

The effort was poor but the Wolves couldn't miss in the first half.

We still ended the game with a better shooting percentage than they did

better shooting percentage
eFG%: Pels 47% Wolves 49%
TS%: Pels 49% (barf) Wolves 53%
hidden margins:
3PT: Pels 9-28 Wolves 14-32
FT: Pels 11-18 Wolves 19-24
+23 from 3 and line more than cancels out Pels advantage in the paint (52-36)
TO: Pels 18 Wolves 16
Pts off TO: Pels 7 Wolves 20
the Wolves had 14 steals to the Pels 7. TOs were a little high, but 14 steals/live ball TOs is the real unacceptable number here. that will kill you every time.

I'm confident that we're 9-5 or 10-4 if we didn't have a really bad run of injuries to 3 starters.

Kushner wrote an article echoing the OPs sentiments.

In their seven wins, the Pelicans are committing 13.3 turnovers and generating 29.4 assists. In the seven losses, the Pelicans are committing 17.4 turnovers and generating 24.4 assists.
It’s cut and dry. Flipping those five possessions per night from assists to turnovers changes the entire complexion of the Pelicans’ performance.
Those numbers aptly illustrate why they’ve skidded to a 3-6 record since point guard Elfrid Payton sprained his right ankle on Oct. 27. It exposed New Orleans’ lack of ball-handling depth.

^^^ This guy gets it.
9-5 EASILY.

ALvin Gentry and his generally apathetic attitude on the side line. Zero sense of urgency and it really shows in the players

This thread was not to try and down play the effect injuries have had on this team thus far in the season.
I was focusing on the On Court issues and it’s very apparent that the team has been incredibly sloppy with the ball all year. That’s including AD and specifically Jrue. If they clean up that area I think you will see the team win more of the close games and the other games will stay out of reach of the opponent.

I agree with the general premise- more assists and less TOs is a good recipe. They have a lack of ball handlers, getting Payton back helps there
But "cut and dry" is reductive. For example, they shoot 50% in wins and 46% in losses; that's 4 assists right there on average. So, if they shoot a higher %, they hit assist mark and win.
It's always complicated, but with TOV, most importantly it is specifically the live ball TOV that kill them.
Live Ball v Dead Ball Turnovers
Live Ball TOV Stats Per Game
per 100 possessions and all sorted in descending order, the Pels rank 14th in TOV, 5th in live ball TOV, 28th in dead ball TOV, and 2nd in live ball TOV%.
some of that is cost of doing business in this system (more passes means greater TOV chances v more dribbling (Monty system) means lower TOV chances). some of that is that they are lacking ball handlers. and some of that is just sloppy play at times.
Holiday has been awful with live ball TOV so far- he averages about 3.5 per 100 possessions by himself. Payton can help a lot there

I agree. I still think the most root of root causes is the defense. Better defense leads to easier offense before the other defense is set which leads to fewer turnovers and then the better offensive output that creates allows the Pels to set their defense which leads to better defense and keeps the cycle going.

Right.
Question is have league rules changes to freedom of movement hurt defenses (not just the Pels) too much?
Also, just how real and sustainable was the post Boogie jump in defense? I tend to think it's more real than not, but I have serious questions about how they get by with Davis off.
Don't remember it being that bad last year, but could be wrong
