we don't have that much anyway, and if we do get cap room we will have no flexibility after re-signing thornton and that FA

Seems like the only way to get Gasol and keep MT5 long term is to deal Okafor for an expiring and keep Peja's expiring. Then I don't know if we can keep West.
What's the deal with all the trade exceptions we have? I still don't get how exactly they can be used, or if they are even likely to use them. Shinn REALLY needs to GTFO.

The most likely scenario if we use them is teams with excess players they need to dump. Like part of why Portland was so eager to move Rudy is they wanted to free up roster spots. Not sure if they still do or not, but if they do, those DC to Portland rumors made it sound like combo guard Bayless was very available, so we could use part of Rasual Butler's trade exception to take him for nothing.
ETA: You can't combine them but assuming we freed up enough cap space dumping Songaila, or were willing to go over the tax we could take on a player with up to a $6.2 million salary using MoPete's TE.

Actually we can take on a little more than that. We can take on 125% of his 2009 salary using his trade exception.

If we just let Peja's contract expire we can't just sign someone to a max deal. You either have to be that far under the cap for the contract or use sign and trades.
I would assume we would use our MLE next year on MT5 if we had too. I don't think resigning him will be a problem.

Iguodala's contract is an albatross. A trade for him would effectively kill cap flexibility and put the Hornets right where they have been the last two years.
so?
we would have great talent on the floor
the problem with the hornets is they had albatross contracts who were fricking garbage when they played, or didnt play for that matter
regardless of what philly fans thihnk about ai2, that doesnt mean shite, sometimes you just need a change of scenery. hell, look at yunel escobar for the braves, zach randolph last year, etc etc

who would want a 14 mil broken down Peja anyway

Have we learned nothing from the last few years? The Hornets don't have the revenue or the ownership to have a bloated roster.
4 years and $55 million for Iguodala is not smart for the Hornets. Add in Okafor 4 years and $50 million, Paul's max deal, and Ariza's midlevel. Haven't even gotten to Thornton and West's next contracts.
That's a ridiculous amount of money and years for a team that would still be small and thin upfront and probably no better than third in the West the next two years.

i don't think west gets a "next contract" unless the CBA is drastically changed

I was watching a post Ariza Demps interview and he talked about talking to West last week and how they see him as a long term piece and want to keep him here. I can see where that's just GM speak, but it was unprompted so there could be some truth to it.
In a chat a few days ago Steve Kyler said he thought FA payouts next season would be as brutal as the over paying this season was ridiculous. Although he's also the guy saying they are aiming for a $45 million hard cap so his sources are feeding him ownership best case scenarios I think.

So we're stuck with Peja playing a limited role in a contract year, hopefully staying healthy with fewer minutes. This may be the best production we get from him per minute since 07-08.

That's pretty much what we have to hope for at this point. The guy can still shoot, and he should get more open looks this year, obviously. Maybe Stojakoswish will surface again

It is not wholly unreasonable that Peja with limited minutes could really help us this year. Even win a game or two for us. Not saying he's worth the money but if he's hot he's dangerous.

Perhaps not.
For all his shortcomings, he is still a 20ppg scorer and he will be very hard to replace.

No he's not. His averages with the Hornets have been:
16.4
13.3
12.7

Brackins showed an unexpectedly good 3 point shot in Summer League (46%). He has to prove it in the regular season, but he might be able to give us what old Peja gives us.

Wow I can't believe we are paying Peja 15 mil.
Posted on 8/13/10 at 10:31 pm to marchballer
If he averages double digit points a game and isn't a total black hole on defense, then I will consider this season a success for Peja
Posted on 8/14/10 at 5:28 pm to TigerinATL
I was responding to a post about resigning West. Not Peja. I think we can all agree he has a fork sticking out of his back.
