"The Memphis Grizzlies finessed New Orleans Pelicans to earn a cheap first-round pick"

That was a headline from Memphis Grizzlies beat writer Jack Williams 7 months ago! At the time, the Grizzlies were absolutely sure the 2022 first round pick of the Lakers would go to Memphis via New Orleans, as part of the Jonas V trade.
Quoting Williams: "In a blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, Memphis traded for the possibility of getting the Lakers’ 2022 first-round pick. What’s the caveat, you ask? If the pick lands anywhere in the top ten, this pick will go to New Orleans. To put it even more simply, the Grizzlies will get this pick.
Heck, LeBron James could miss the entire 2021 season and the Lakers wouldn’t fall into the lower third of the league.
The Grizzlies originally acquired this pick in the Jonas Valanciunas deal. The headliner on this deal was that Memphis send JV to the Pelicans, and in exchange, they’d move up in the first and second rounds of the 2021 NBA Draft. Eventually, they’d end up picking Ziaire Williams with the 10th-overall pick.
The part that went under the radar, however, was the fact that the Grizzlies were all but guaranteed another first-round pick in this deal — one that originally belonged to the Lakers. Granted, this may be a late-round pick, it’s still a great asset for the organization to have."
End of Williams quote.
Now, I understand that there is a slight possibility that the Lakers pick will slide down to 11 or lower, but the odds of that are VERY LOW. So, sons, I am not counting my chickens just yet. But if we do wind up with the Lakers first round pick, I just might have to write Mr. Williams and remind him about counting chickens before they are hatched!!

You couldn't have waited to post this in like 26 hours?

lets be 100% fair...nobody, especially not the pelicans' front office, thought we would be getting a top 10 pick from the lakers this season. NOBODY

Agreed. But it still brings a smile to see what the Grizzlies thought they would get.

Think about how big of a disappointment that would be. I'd be so pissed off if that happened.

You just trying to bring that bad juju

Like a 3% chance of that happening. We would have to get hopped by at least three teams with worse records than the Lakers.
Possible but extremely unlikely.

Thanks. I searched high and low for that info. Also, could not figure out how to calculate it.

yeah. It is basically 0.413% or something
6% chance for #1 pick tho
literally 15x more likely to be #1 than #11

I know it worked out--but this pick should have been lottery-protected

I thought that our chances were close to 50-50. I knew that Westbrook would be a disaster for them, and I figured that either AD or LeBron had a good chance of getting hurt and missing a bunch of the season.

Crewz said Griffin had to work very hard just to get top 10 protection

I'm sure he did. Nearly all of us immediately thought we won the trade by a good margin. The last time I remember the general fan consensus about a trade being like that was when they initially misreported the Jrue Holiday for Nerlens Noel trade and said we were getting Jrue and a Philly pick instead of Philly getting Nerlens and a Pels pick.

Oh damn---they were able to move up to 10 and got a 1st. If this pick was 11-15 I'd be pissed now lol. I guess that was the cost of getting rid of Bledsoe--sure we thought the LA pick would be high 20s.
Sheesh.
but we got a top 10 and Trey--so it worked out

Well maybe Griffin was thinking it was possible otherwise why getting this protection at all?

Thinking it was just a throw-in compromise that no one really thought would pan out. Sounds like Griff wanted more protection and just to humor him Memphis agreed to the top 10 as they themselves thought the Lakers would never fall into the top 10.

Well now they likely get a top 4 protected Bucks pick in about 2 years.
If THAT one doesn’t convey, Griff must have more lucky horseshoes up his arse than a six year old with a family sized box of Lucky Charms.
