There are a few directions the Pelicans can go with the No. 14 pick. Trading it away could be an option as this team hopes to make a playoff push with (maybe, just once) a healthy roster. Considering their current needs, I think the best route here would be going BSA: Best Shooter Available. With Dick already off the board, Jordan Hawkins is the right pick for a squad that was 23rd in 3-pointers made and 29th in 3-pointers attempted last season.

Hawkins doesn’t just add one more floor spacer to put around Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. He can be a weapon on the second unit with his movement off the ball and his aggression hunting 3-point looks in transition. His constant movement through baseline screens and pindowns would add a dynamic the Pelicans haven’t been able to use since JJ Redick left town. Hawkins doesn’t have the highest ceiling, but he has a skill set that will be very useful in today’s NBA. —Will Guillory

I don't see Orlando drafting Dick @11 if they take Black @6.

I’m really not a fan of this guy. I really don’t think he has a single skill other than shooting that would be nba level. He’s not a good defender and is way too thin to even become one. His playmaking is hilariously bad for a guard and he’s a poor rebounder to boot. He reminds me of another UConn guard in James bouknight who is a complete bust.

Bouknight can't shoot. Hawkins is a flamethrower with NBA ready movement shooting. He has a clear path as a role player in the league from day 1. Bouknight was mostly upside.

I like Hawkins but im more intrigued about other guys that’ll be available at 14.

I feel like as the draft process goes on y’all are gonna like more guys than Hawkins as well. Watching the combine now and the white kid from Santa Clara is nice. Shot better than Hawkins and can rebound. I like sensabaugh more than him as well.

Hawkins is tiny. He just weighed 186 at the combine. Guys that small don’t make it in the Nba. I thought we learned our lesson with Kira

Again role player. Probably an off the bench shooter ala Isiah Joe, Bones Hyland, and the Tre Mann types. He shoots 85% of his shots from 3, I'm not really worried about his size when he's mostly going to run around the perimeter to get his shots.

As far as his defense goes, I don't expect him to start especially early on in his career but has value as a pure shooter.

Pels met with Dereck Lively at the combine today. I'd like that pick

This might we the worst draft in NBA history after the first three picks. This is just city after that.

If Lively is available take him. He is big and has defensive presence. Might end up being a bust, but he could end up being pretty darn good.

I want a guy who does all the dirty work. I feel like that is what we are lacking

The cheapest way for the Pelicans to get both rim protection and shooting without losing anyone or assets is draft a rim protector to groom and cheap shooters to fill out the roster. It's not the sexiest route but it's the most sensible one. They just have to make sure the big they draft can actually play and contribute in their rookie season.

No thanks.

If we’re going shooter, I’d rather 6’7” Dariq Whitehead - he should be available when we pick.

National player of the year in high school. He shot above 40% from 3 this year as well.

I disagree with the notion that this is a weak draft class; I would argue the opposite in that it’s loaded with undervalued talent.

Give me Whitehead, Schifino, or Lively - all should be available without trading up.

Agree. Draft rim protection with dereck lively. Try to fill fringe roster spots with shooters. Can the pels get Yuta wantanabe, or trade Naji to a team that needs wings for a shooter? That’s the type of moves you’re looking at

I was okay with Lively, but just found out.... he signed with Klutch agency! Nick Smith Jr., too. Gross

Drafting for immediate need in the lottery is kinda lame imo

Hawkins can help us but I feel like if he pans out he’s somewhere on the Malik Beasley/Luke Kennard/Landry Shamet spectrum. Borderline playoff rotational players. Gary trent type of player (legit 6th man who gives your shooting) would be an excellent outcome for Jordan Hawkins. So why take a cost-controlled guy in the draft to fill the 8th man role?

Personally, I’d rather take a guard with higher upside like Cason Wallace or Keyonte George (or a similarly talented player at another position) and try to get some cheap shooting using Naji, Kira, Wily with 2nds attached
