My guess is the replacement will be in house.

Gayle was just paying two coaches last year.

I don't see her paying another coach ~15 million to not be here, + a new guy.

Also Kidd being in the mix again tells me Griff still doesn’t have a good grasp of hiring coaches.

Dude has been basically a dud in that regard and Lue’s struggles again show that it was Lebron that was the driver behind that success, not Griff’s coach management

Hire the first woman head coach and you’re a hero.

If we were going to hire from staff we should’ve done it last year when we had a legit good coach in Finch sitting on the sideline.

Yup. I think Gayle is ready to spend some money. No more project seasons.

But the first reports of promoting Weatherspoon are disturbing.

I think she's too green to be hired as head coach, but the main reason everyone wanted a young assistant over a retread is their purported ability to connect to and motivate the players. All indications are Weatherspoon has done exactly that with this group of players.

Unfortunately, I can see this being a MAJOR factor to Griffin.

If Zion and players like Weatherspoon so much, keep her. You don't have to promote her to HC.

Hire a HC that you really, really believe can lead the team to deep playoff runs. Because otherwise, the entire FO is out.

Griffin has to know that this hire is EVERYTHING to him.

If it doesn't work, he's done.
Griff should be out the door with SVG, to be honest.

If you replayed these last two years 100 times, they've gone about as poorly as they could possibly go.

And everything was sunshine and roses with SVG until the losses started piling up and the team realized what an old school coach really means.

Not saying Weathespoon would be bad, but every coach is great until fingers need to be pointed and blame needs to be placed. And rarely do I feel like guys earning millions truly want to take sole responsibility for things

She needs way more seasoning and to be at least a lead assistant first.

Keep her on staff. But hire a person that has earned their dues.

For instance Becky Hammon if you are going to go that route is far, far more qualified.

It’s well known the Pelicans were Gayle’s favorite when Tom was still alive while Tom favored the Saints. I think she will put the resources behind this team to find a good leader to go with our young roster.

It was a terrible hire. If you can't relate to players and work well with staff, none of the X + O's matter. You have to be able to teach, and if you can't build rapport with the modern NBA player, they will not learn what you teach.

All season, the players had WAY MORE positive things to say about Weatherspoon than they ever had to say about Van Gundy.

I think Griff knows exactly who he wants. This is probably his last coaching hire so I assume he wouldn’t make the choice with a gamble.

You can’t blame him for all the faults and give him no credit for the growth. Look at how the Bucks struggle to get Giannis involved in anything other than iso and compare that to the ways we got Zion the ball even with no shooters around him.

As far as Hayes, he specifically mentioned his benching as a wake up call to take good defensive role seriously.

I credit putting in their own work and entering year 2 for their growth. LOL I will not give him credit for benching Jax. That was a no brainer. Giannis is doing just fine man lol, It just becomes harder in the playoffs with the court shrinking a bit.

I agree with Crewz:

It seems like the top argument for 'Spoon is "The players love her"

Thats the type of person you make lead assistant, not Head Coach IMO

Especially of a young team. A bunch of mature 30 year olds, give them the one they like. Young kids? Nah

Bro we going on our 3rd coach in 3 seasons. Banking on this being Griffin's last hire is defying all odds.
