Two names to quickly emerge in league circles as likely targets in the Pelicans’ GM search — albeit two candidates who have both been selective in the extreme in considering offers — are former Cavs and Suns GM David Griffin and longtime Celtics executive Mike Zarren

Stein has legit connections within the Pels.

Was Griffin the one to give Shumpert, JR, and Tristan Thompson those massive contracts ?

The problem with trying to judge Griffin is that everything he did in Cleveland was in conjunction with Lebron's wishes.

The appeal of having a somewhat blank slate and a ton of control is up there for some guys.

We’re about to flip AD and someone can either put together an immediate contender or start banking assets for a long term build like Boston or Philly.

Tristan Thompson

To be fair, he had played his arse off in the playoffs the season prior, and looked like he was gonna be dominant for a while even though he can't shoot to save his life.

Yes, and he also basically paid to trade Joe Harris away around that same time.

There isn't a whole lot to me that gets me excited about Griffin.

Hard pass on Griffin. Zarren sounds intriguing.

Griffin seems to be pretty well respected.

I'm all in on Zarren but massive longshot.

This is probably the most prized GM job to have at the moment. Whoever it is will have a chance to put together whatever kind of young team he wants. Young talent, picks, whatever floats your boat

Not if ownership isn't willing to invest.

I'd be thrilled with Griffin or Zarren as team president and allowed to hire GM/coach/etc and run this team like an NBA franchise.

Will Gayle spend on the uncapped side? Will they show enough to entice candidates like Griffin and Zarren to seriously consider New Orleans?

Maybe Gayle wants to unite with Griffin in a He-Man-LeBron-Hater's-Club.

The Pelicans have earned the Benson's nearly a Billion dollars in what? Seven years? The value of the franchise is only going to go up. It would be foolish not to invest in something that gives you those types of returns.

ETA: Also in terms of revenue, The Pelicans brought in $214M in revenue for last season. Operating expense is $29M, Player expenses are $133M. So, while I'm sure there are some other expenses in there somewhere, Gayle made over $50M off of the pelicans last year. Imagine if we were consistently good

I don't know where your figures are from, but I'll assume it's from those yearly Forbes reports. If they're accurate that's why I don't see the need for a ticket selling star in the short term. The difference between a playoff level Hornicans and a rebuilding Hornicans is about 150,000 tickets per year. With an average ticket price around $32 IIRC, that's roughly $5 million per year. If you're making $50 you can live with investing $5 in a foundation that will set you up to make more than $50 in the future.

Yeah, it's from the Forbes report

The other number is just in reference to the value of the franchise going from $338M in 12 to $1.22B today.

I agree. But if you only see the franchise as a money making operation for other priorities, not a serious, long term investment, why wouldn't you pocket that cash and let Dell Demps keep things on cruise control?

We'll know how serious they are if they create Pels only upper level business/marketing roles and spend on beefing up basketball ops (from FO to coaching and everything in between). If guys like Griffin and Zarren are actually interested in coming on board, that's a great sign

Gotta spend money to make money.

The franchise’s worth is on the low end of an NBA franchise because we are seen as a rinky dink operation

The team’s valuation may grow as the league’s grows but the biggest value for someone buying it now would be to move it to Seattle.

We put together a solid well run operation and the franchise becomes worth significantly more and lays further roots in NO to try and keep it here if/when Gayle dies.
