On the NBA's fast-moving coaching carousel ...

The growing belief in league circles is that Doc Rivers has swiftly supplanted Mike D'Antoni as the favorite for the Philadelphia job ...

With Ty Lue ranking as the early favorite to replace Rivers with the Clippers

So looks like Griffin’s purported top 2 could be off the board soon.

And I’m sure that came straight from his mouth and not their agents

Now Woj:

After a productive Wednesday of talks with Sixers, Doc Rivers has emerged as a serious candidate in process to hire a new coach, sources tell ESPN. Rivers left town after meeting with ownership and GM Elton Brand. Mike D’Antoni remains other prominent candidate in search.

I think we can assume that Rivers gets that job at this point

Will Nola ever be in the running for anything?

It’s the obvious job for him, still think it’s a mistake though.

It’s basically LAC redux. Win now franchise with a flawed core, with one injury prone star, that is largely tapped out, and ownership that is going to look at you as the problem before they make any major moves with their stars.

But as long as we avoid Kidd now that Lue is going to get promoted most likely, I will be fine with whatever direction we go.

Personally I think we are being done a favor. There are potentially better coaches out there than Doc Rivers, who is a mildly good coach that gets treated (And paid) like a great one. And I’m not huge on Lue either.

There are a lot of smart basketball people that think Doc is flat out not a good coach.

I’m ok with Philly winning that sweepstakes if we do.

Genuinely curious, who?

I get slightly overrated as you hear him occasionally get mentioned in the pantheon of current coaches, and I don’t think he is, but not good?

That’s a hard one when the guy has consistently made it to the playoffs and demonstrated just a season ago taking a group of role player vets and youngsters to the playoffs and a 48 win season. Stealing two games from GS despite trading away their best player at the deadline. A best player that was a third fiddle on that Philly team which only won 3 more games in an inferior conference.

Head coaches are basically the man managers

It's the assistant coaches who are the Xs and Os guys

That’s got to be the dumbest shite I’ve ever heard. You do realize most of these head coaches started out as assistants at some point in their careers right?

I don’t think that’s really true most of the time. Yes, occasionally some head coaches delegate a lot of offensive or defensive strategy and scheming to someone, but I am actually struggling to name a coach that was completely hands off in that department? Especially once you get to the in game X’s and O’s, rotations, and adjustments.

Now in terms of things we often credit head coaches for, like player development, I would say that is often something that head coaches do not deserve as much credit as they often do. It’s normally the Fred Vinson’s and Kevin Hanson’s of the world that are doing the trench work of developing talent. But it is the HC that hires, fosters, and structures that stuff typically. So they aren’t absent the process, but yeah.

What’s given me a bit of pause with Atkinson is actually how little there has been about him coming to Nola given Trajan Langdon’s relationship.

Does make me wonder if there is more to his tenure than has been discussed. Because by all accounts he was a flawed but very solid coach that arguably overachieved with his rosters.

There has been pretty much silence on him, which I admit is very weird.

Like seconds after Doc got fired it leaked that we expressed interest.

With Atkinson’s inability to handle egos and having players turn on him whether it’s his fault or not is probably not a good look. I can see front offices thinking he’d make a better assistant than a head coach.. but who really knows. It seems he’s not on anyone’s radar.

It could be an "out of sight out of mind" thing with Atkinson since he's been on the market for so long, and he doesn't have the brand recognition of the others with prior experience.

If we hire Atkinson and see that he's a hell of a coach then great, but with that record im not getting my hopes up like I did with Gentry.

With the way things are going, they can pretty much have any assistant they want. But considering the number of available job out there this season and the lack of interests shown in this group of assistants is interesting though.
