So what do we make of 3 straight DNPs for JJ and then playing last night?

Was Griff sitting him anticipating a trade?

And that trade never materialized or he was getting lowball offers and decided to start playing him again to get those offers up?

Did SVG just want to change things up since JJ was struggling and then re-inserted him after a little sit?

Definitely an interesting thing. He certainly played a bit better last night than he had been.

I have a feeling that JJ is pretty pissed about all of it. He’s a competitor so he wants to play every night. But, if he’s going to sit, at least it’s so that he can get traded to a team closer to home. Trade doesn’t work out AND he wasn’t playing? Worst case scenario for him.

Yesterday was the end of the "Trade Aggregation" deadline which is where you can trade a player in time for him to be bundled with other players in a trade deadline trade. If he's traded today then he can't be bundled in a trade deadline trade by the team that acquires him. I would guess that Griff had some trades lined up and nobody pulled the trigger, so now JJ will probably be here until the deadline.

I think the hope was to trade him on Feb 2 when additional players were eligible to be traded, but when that didn’t happen, you have no choice but to continue playing him to maybe up his value a bit.

I still expect him gone one way or another by the trade deadline.

Shamit has suggested the "re-aggregation" deadlibe played a part.

Basically 2/2 was the deadline to acquire a player and then be able to include that player in an aggregated trade before the trade deadline. That deadline was motivating talks between the Pels and other teams. Once that passed there's not as much immediate urgency so they put him back in the lineup for now since talks likely paused for the time being.

ETA: TigerATL beat me to it but yeah basically what he said

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

I think he will be here a few more weeks then.

Lonzo by all accounts has been heavily involved in trade discussions, but they're still playing him big minutes.

I'm wondering of JJ hasn't been having a little nagging shoulder soreness or something, which has been affecting his shooting, and they just rested him for a couple games.

Why wouldn't they just say that though, to not impact his trade value?

Wonder if it's any co-incidence that Zo has been a lot more aggressive now they've started shopping him

I would say that, or that it's something he could play with so they didn't want to list him in case they needed him to play as an emergency situation

I think that's because teams that may be interested in Lonzo are interested in him long term, not as an immediate answer this season.

Whereas JJ would be brought in to make an impact this season, and there's not much gas in the tank going forward after this season.

Yeah, I saw that but cannot imagine it was a huge factor. The teams we were supposedly targeting are contenders, so not sure their concern would be dumping him again in aggregation by the deadline. I would think those teams are looking at him as a role player on a playoff run.

Yeah, I think we have allowed him to narrow his destinations so much that those teams are going to wait it out and see if he gets bought out.

Considering most of his preferred destinations already have really good perimeter shooting, it's not really a surprise he isn't valued right now.

I think at this point he's staying for the remainder of the year unless he want to negotiate a buyout where he gives up a good bit of money so we can have some room to breath under the tax.
Or he can be part of a trade for someone like Beal, and then be bought out by them.

I just can't see the Nets doing anything to get him, and i don't think Philly or Boston want to give up anything to get him either as they are doing fine. I seriously doubt the Knicks are interested in him, or I should say, or interested in giving up anything for him, but they are the ideal trade partner for us b/c we can shed salary without taking it back with them, making other trades easier for us.
