Simmons and Russillo on Pels/Ingram
Posted on 7/8/24 at 11:45 am

Summary:
Have us behind Phoenix and Memphis
We have no C
No one wants Ingram. Looked around the league and can't think of a single fit.
They would not trade Jarrett Allen for him straight up. Bill wouldn't. Ryen was considering it. (I remember be called a moron for saying their value was equal.)
We have too many dudes who want the ball. (Not sure I agree there.)
Talked a little about maybe Ayton, but don't see why Portland would want Ingram.
Could still be good if Zion goes off.
Granted, this was recorded before our wizard GM pulled in Theis.
Also, Ryen seemed to think Dyson was still on the team.
But I think the takeaway is that Ingram is not in demand.
How Griff plays this, will determine his future and the Zion era most likely.
I know you shouldn't sell low, but I also believe in sunk cost fallacy.
Best case scenario is Ingram is humbled by this and changes his game.
I just think that is unlikely.

My main hope is having the best true PG since CP3 really elevates the offense as a whole and changes the dynamic of shots taken. I'm hoping BI embraces Murray's abilities to run the offense more alongside Zion at a higher rate than his forced midrange shots. He can absolutely play with the ball in his hands, but he continues to force up way too many low percentage shots.
More spot up threes and drives to the basket and we will be in good hands.

These national guys are purely entertainment and have no insight to what’s actually happening. How can they possibly give an accurate ranking when they think Dyson Daniels is still on the team?

Obvious at this point. The entire league and the pelicans all see him for what he is

Best case is he takes the Andre Igoudala/Manu Ginobli route and is ok being a super sub. I give it about a zero percent chance.

At this point, we really need Ingram to change his shot profile, that is the only way his value will increase to either Pelicans, or another team.
Having Murray create will help get him those shots, but it will be up to him to take them.
76% of his shots were 2 pointers, and only 24% of his shots were from 3.
That needs to be closer to 60/40.
For comparison;
Trey Murphy shot 71% 3s, McCollum shot 53% 3s, Herb Jones 46% 3s, Dejounte Murray 38% 3s.
Also, just so happens his only year as an Allstar (Year 1 with Pels) he took the most 3s of his career.

He said he liked Dyson but brought up him playing behind Trae young….. unless I heard it wrong….

Bill mentioned Phoenix because “they were the 6th seed” and no mention of us having the same record. And Sacramento, even though we beat them SIX times. Apparently dinging us because we have too many good players.
Ryan is great, and largely didn’t argue with him and just wanted to discuss the center position and roster construction.

Maybe I misheard that part. Was multi tasking.

Correct. I do think he may have had a brain fart as he started talking, but he did recover saying now he’s behind or next to Trae Young. Ryan knows the team fairly well IMO

Bill is entertaining but doesn't know ball. Don't really care what he has to say on the matter, but not surprised his talking points don't hold up to scrutiny

Basically Griffin missed the window for a decent cash out offer on Ingram. This was last summer and when there seemed to be a decent market for him
So you can either now opt to accept letting him walk for pennies or hope for a turnaround and sell at better value in season.

There are not enough minutes in a game to get Zion, CJ, BI, DM, and Trey the amount of shots they need.
I'm up for dishing BI for a low return at this point just to get him off the team so he doesn't keep Trey off the floor.

I didn’t hear the part about dinging for too many good players, I heard dinging for too many players who need the ball. I wasn’t 100% paying attention though.

Just because Bill Simmons says something that doesn't make it true
You know hoe many things that dude has been wrong about. The options for Ingram do seem to be running out.
This honestly wasn't the greatest free agency trade cycle for Ingram to be made available. I still think Griff keeps him if he doesn't get comparable value back.
Seems like you might have to trade him at the deadline if things aren't progressing.

When you say low return, how low?
What would that deal be?

Give me Kessler or WCJ. I would hope some assets would come with them. I want a cohesive starting unit, not one Willie is having to scratch his head every night trying to figure out how to make it work or make everyone happy.

Givr Russillo 5 seconds. He'll either brag about talking to front office guys around the league or brag about playing pickup basketball.

Also, Ryen seemed to think Dyson was still on the team.
His quote was, "I just don't know who the center is, it's Missi right now, the Baylor kid. That can't be the plan. And, there's all these dudes over the years that we've all liked in the draft, or at least I have. And Dyson Daniels, I'd still hold out a little hope for him, but he's going to be playing off the ball, or he's gonna be the backup to Trae's minutes all the time. But you'd love to figure out a way for him to close because of his decision making...he just got lost in the shuffle, there's some health stuff as well, but I get the Murray deal because it doesn't feel like they gave up a ton..."
It was just a flow of thoughts, but he was not implying that Dyson was still on the team, he was essentially segueing from Missi being a recent draft pick, to Dyson being a recent draft pick who was used in the trade for Murray.

If BI is not a smooth operator as a starter, do you think he will begin to lose minutes and slide down to a 6th man player?
I think Murray will fit in with the team and squeeze BI into a lesser role unless BI changes his shooting range.
Yes, the Pels will start BI in the beginning; however, I think it will become evident that he is not quite right for the revised roster.
