The New Orleans Pelicans are signing forward Kaiser Gates on a two-way NBA contract, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Gates averaged 14 points on 55.4 percent 3-point shooting for G League Long Island last season.

This is the type of 3 point shooting I was looking to add? 55%?!? Is he steph 2.0?

Looking at his career numbers all the way back to college, that 55% is such an absurd outlier, he'll never duplicate that again. He can shoot it but it doesn't look like he's a sharpshooter.

With the bulls summer league this summer he made 40 percent of his threes in approximately 5 attempts a game. Not 55 percent but the guy can shoot.

You guys got jokes in this thread, but he's got a quick and high release as well as shows some points off of cutting to the basket in this GLeague game where he scored 30 points.

I'm not saying "No Trey, No Problem", but if he can defend, he might have taken Landers Nolley's 2 way contract.

It’ll be interesting if he or Hawkins gets minutes early. I feel like Pels don’t want to pressure Hawkins into playing so many minutes early and this guy seems more battle tested with several stints in gleague.

What a coincidence.Just yesterday over breakfast my wife and were discussing Kaiser Gates and whether his 3 point shot was legit.

Without Murphy and who knows how long Alvarado is out for, they kind of have to play Hawkins since there's no shooting threat coming off the bench.

that is insane efficiency, gotta be a small population size

Hence signing Gates. I think preseason will show a lot if Hawkins is ready to contribute.

Hawkins big concern is will he get run off the court on defense because of his lack of size. Now you have a 6'7, 225 guy that looks like he can knock down C&S 3s at a high rate.
Before we print the shirts though, looking at his stats he has been decent to good at the 3, nowhere near elite until recently.
35.7% at Xavier in college.
37.5%, 33.1%, and 35.6% his first 3 years in the GLeague
46.8% last year in the GLeague
Hopefully last year is the new normal for him and not a hot streak.

I think we're in big trouble if this is a guy they're going to have to rely on to space the floor for us early on. He's never even been an NBA level player.

That leaves us with 1 roster spot and 1 2way contract

It can really only be 1.

Unless they convince BI to take 8 3s a game, I would imagine they will try to find different ways to keep the offense flowing. It doesn't have to be from 3, you just need to be able to move the defense with your own player and ball movement. Remember that the offense was fine in 20-21 under SVG when he didn't even have a system other than get it to the 2 stars. They were rated #11 in ORtg that season and 27th in 3PM.

I'd feel much better if they make a move for an actual NBA level shooter. You lose way too much without Alvarado and Murphy to sit on what we have.

Such as? We can't even realistically get Buddy without giving up someone like JV. I don't think they honestly believe Hawkins solves the shooting problem this year. They just had pretty limited options.
The back half of the roster almost doesn't matter any way. This season will be made or broken by the health of the Big 3. It's either going to work this season, or it will be time to send at least 1 if not 2 of the Big 3 out in a major trade.
