taking on bad contracts in the beginning of a rebuild is exactly what you want to do because it gives you more future assets. plus if you believe Nelson knows what he's doing, you think you can keep Love on the court better than anyone else
most importantly you want to be ready to be a real threat in the west in about 3-4 years. right when Love's contract comes off the books and you have a max slot.
getting Love is the exact opposite of rushing. getting Kevin Love is a move with the future in mind
It still depends on what we're getting for Love and what we are giving up besides expiring crap like Moore and Hill.
If we get Love with the Cavs' late 1st from Houston in exchange for Hill and Moore, I am willing to accept that.
If we're sending out the 4 and not getting a pick in that area back, I'm NOT willing to accept that.
Moving back to 5, 8, or 10 to take him on? Yes. Giving up a high lottery pick for him? frick no!

absolutely when deciding on a potential trade with Love you have to weigh out 1) how much can this player help me now? 2) what am I getting in return?
honestly I need move from Cleveland than you proposed. question is how badly does Cleveland want to get off the Love contract?

Cavs have no need to dump Love's contract. They have less than 50m tied up after this year (including Love's contract).
They can ship out Thompson and Clarkson at the deadline to get under the luxury tax. Jr frees up 12m in space when he gets traded or cut as well.
Cavs floated this story to see if the Knicks would do something stupid and offer their 3rd for Love and the Cavs 5th

Cleveland has a ton of picks, but they are mainly seconds. Which aren't enough to eat that contract.
They also sent out their 2020 first to Atlanta but it is lottery protected and will likely convey as 2 2nds instead.
Their potential assets as of now-
1sts-
2019 1st (5th)
2019 1st from Houston (26th?)
2020 1st (Lottery only. Conveys to Atlanta if outside lottery)
2021 1st
2022 1st
2023 1st
2024 1st
2025 1st
2020 2nd
2020 2nd from Utah
2021 2nd from Portland
2022 1st from Milwaukee (Dependent on 2020 Milwaukee pick conveying to Phoenix, which should)
2022 2nd from Houston
2022 2nd from Washington
2023 2nd
2023 2nd from Portland
2024 2nd (pick swap with Utah)
2024 2nd from Miami (only if 31-55)
NOTE - 2021 and 2022 2nds are slotted as going to Atlanta because I'm assuming (safely) that Cleveland won't make the playoffs and will have their 2020 pick in the lottery.
These are basically shite assets unless we get their 2020 pick if it lands in the lottery and/or a bunch of their future first and/or pick swaps.

Here’s a realistic way I could see it happening.
First, we trade the #4 to Atlanta for the 8 & 10.
Then we trade Wood & Solo & Moore & 10 to Clev for Love.
Wood is young throw-in replacement of Love for them. Then Clev has the 5 & the 10 so they can really jump start their rebuild this year.
We keep a lottery pick, #10, which we can use for a big like Bol or Hayes.
Thoughts?

I think so too. Griffin is close, I think, to the Cavs' current GM. This is something floated as a smokescreen.

A project at 10 to obtain an aging player with a flexibility crushing contract? And giving up the four to do so??? Sounds fricking horrible.

Have you started drinking early?
Jrue's contract expires after the 20-21 season with a player option for the year after. And, oh by the way, Jrue is coming off a near career-year and there are quite a few teams who would offer us assets in return if we move him at the deadline or next off-season.
To even compare Holiday to Love is mind-boggling. To think it's worth it to pass on a potential talent like Garland (who you can have on this team for relatively cheap) even more so. Whatever assets you get from acquiring Love who will hamstring this team for FOUR YEARS is simply not worth it.
You do realize you can go out and sign actual quality free agents for that money, right?

Not sure if you’ve been out of the country....in Antarctica, without access to the outside world, but the Pels ended up getting the first pick in the draft.

He's making a hamfisted comparison based solely on Love and Holiday's age (never mind Holiday is still younger, playing better, and is actually sought after by other teams).

Stop...we aren’t sending out picks for this contract

This is an awful take. Awful. Jrue is a much better player right now, is almost 2 years younger, and has a 2/$52m or 3/$77m (player option) contract as opposed to Love's 4/$120m. No reasonable person can make the comment that you just made unless they were trolling. You typically try to back up your contrarian opinions with some reason, but that's just dogshit.

Since I didn't watch much Cavs basketball last year (which of you did?), can Love still run at all? I'm honestly trying to figure out if he fits into our offense, and I think how well he runs the floor now is important to that.
Posted on 6/19/19 at 8:28 pm to DeionDeion
Yeah you take on contracts at the beginning, but the purpose of that is to afford yourself cap flexibility in the 3rd-4th year before you have to pay max money to your star, where you can hopefully add a max guy next to him before you have to pay him (it's how Golden State was built)
Taking on Love's contract wont give us that flexibility, because as soon as his deal expires we have to pay Zion
