At least Pels have a better X and O gameday coach.
Not thrilled with the hire but it is still the Pels.
It could have been worse.
I'm not so sure Van Gundy's style fits today's NBA.
He can rectify that through some of his assistant hires.

What are the chances Finch comes back without getting a head coaching job and we still hire another lead assistant?

and has said he spent the better part of two years talking to everyone in the league about what he can do better as a HC and where the league is trending.

hope this comes to fruition

True, but when SVG has had the talent, he has been in the post-season pretty consistently. He only had a couple of deep runs, but I'd be happy just getting to the postseason in consecutive years at this point

He's 61 years old on a 4 year deal. If he's getting us into the postseason, its likely that he is the "guy before the guy"...aka they hire a younger guy they think can take us to the next level, a Nick Nurse situation.

I'd be very happy with getting into the postseason consistently under Stan.

Is he a good defensive coach?

Yes, that is one of his main hallmarks. His teams are generally very good defensively.

I'm not saying Finch was part of the problem, but it feels like Griff didn't see him as part of the solution. Finch and Gentry were very aligned in not believing in a rigid system as much as having a more random/dynamic system. That randomness lead to Lonzo taking more 3s than JJ some games.

Some of the thoughts I've seen about ways SVG can improve the offense is to give it the structure and hierarchy that it had lacked. Have the offense run through BI and Zion more instead of giving whoever is open the green light. I think Finch will move on and be replaced by someone who will fit better.

In the 11 seasons Van Gundy has finished as a head coach, his teams have finished in the top half of the league 10 times in defensive rating.

Also have finished in the top 10 eight times.

Maybe we’ll finally get to see that vaunted defensive backcourt we thought we had when we pair Ball with Jrue.

I'm guessing if they hired *insert shiny, new, unproven, current assistant coach here*, you would have been ecstatic?

Only a 4 year deal as well

This and his age is the only issue I have with this hire. How long does he plan on coaching? I really don't want Zion and BI go through 3 or more different coaches during their time here. Especially when new contracts come into play

That's very encouraging to hear. I'm curious where those other 3 teams were there, but a 73% top 10 defense rate is pretty damn good.

523-384 career record. Disciplined basketball.

Basically the opposite of Gentry.

Let's ride

As I said I kind of see him as the guy before the guy.

He is a teacher, and he demands discipline, conditioning, and defense. Instilling those things in a young team could prepare them for when they are ready to take it to the next level.
