A bunch of iso-ball, non-existent perimeter defense, late timeouts, bad personnel groupings... shades of Alvin Gentry. Hopefully Willie learns from these past few games.

I'll say this for Alvin though, he could make an offense look smooth.

One thing a bit troubling to start the season(and yes I know what the aggregate numbers say) is that it looks like we are working really hard to get points. Even when the ball is moving it feels like we take a lot of tough shots. Whereas a lot of teams we play just end up getting smooth looks, often from three. And the games become a back and forth of the opposing team getting easy buckets at the rim or three, then us working really hard to get 2's.

The movement on offense and defense has reduced a lot since the first few games. Willie needs to lay into some people and probably give extended minutes to guys that will play the way he wants.

Quote from Willie on this general topic:

quote:

We can't wait to start trying to play hard with a quarter and a half left in the game. That's directly a reflection of me and I promise we'll be better.

Nail on the head--said last night we don't play with a sense of urgency. Takes it's too long to get going after tip off of 1st quarter and OT.

I bet he wasn't even talking about the offense there. The offense usually isn't the problem. We come out lackadaisical on defense and get punched in the mouth. It's been 4 games in a row now where we let the opposing team come out of the gates and dictate the flow of the game.

I swear man, I have felt like this for years. I dont know what it is but it always seems like they are fighting guys off going through screens and are unable to drive to the hole, and complete opposite on defense. We have no idea how to guard a pick and roll and get through a screen

I'm not sure how we can fix it without shaking up the lineup to mix in more defensive minded players. We have 4 guys who play with an offensive mentality and mindset in the starting lineup. And if the 1 defensive guy struggles ala Herb, we completely lose composure on the defensive end.

I agree, I don't think it's an every game thing, but I think some games they should start Larry over JV.

I mentioned it I think before the season started that the team seems to fit better if Nance started and JV came in with the bench units and then based on how they're playing and what we need to finish the game, that would determine who closes.

JVal needs touches to be good, so it seems like not the best idea to have more of his minutes coincide with CJ/BI/Zion whereas Nance never actually NEEDS a touch to contribute. This would allow JVal to get more touches playing more minutes with lineups that do not have all 3 of BI/CJ/Zion.

Daniels. some day.

it really hurts that neither hayes as mobile Pf or kira as Pg picks can play nba starter basketball. those were and still are positions of need.
team is a year or two away. picks a comin in.
it hurts that zion has been injured 3x in career, a couple really long for recovery.
graham deal not quite as hoped.
cj isn't a two way.
Val + tm3 at 17 worked out for tm3. Val has his days.
nance deal worked out.

Someone like Mike Conley. He has been a huge factor in Utah success this year

I think it's a combination of things, most already mentioned:

- lack of urgency when starting games
- early season experimentation now that we finally have a full squad
- oh wait, don't forget those 3 games we didn't have a full squad
- I love Jose and the spark he brings, but I believe Willie is afraid to bring him off the bench in those critical end-of-game moments because his lack of size makes too many nightmare defensive switching scenarios...which means we are hog tied on options in late game situations until further development happens from young guys
- the other usual stuff...young team, bought in the hype a little too much, etc etc

I want success now and I believe it can be acheived...but also not holding these guys to it this year...as we are still in the upswing phase of this teams trajectory...not riding the wave yet....

It's funny because we presently lead the league in points per game (at 118.5) while also being last in the league in 3PA (at 28.6)

It's not the coaches.
It's the cattle they have.
Funny how they've had 3 coaches, but similar issues.
