We're not going to attract a big time FA.

Older star FAs are notoriously bad deals for the receiving team.

We're not going to hit the jackpot in the lottery and get a Wemby.

So our best bet is to acquire a good player that could be great. OKC did this with SGA. NY did this with Brunson.

Who is the next guy who could take a huge leap like thos two?

Some might argue he's already on the team in Murphy. I have my doubts.

What are some potential future stars that are actually attainable? Not old dudes like Durant, Lillard, Giannis, etc.

I agree, but I don’t really think Murphy has a chance to be a star. His handle isn’t good, and despite being a great leaper he is pretty upright and stiff as an athlete. He’s obviously a great player, but I don’t think he’s ever going to be the star of a franchise.
One guy who comes to mind that could potentially be realistic in a Trey trade is Ajay Mitchell

Yeah, his handle is better but only to the point where he can attack aggressive closeouts. He can't take good defenders off the dribble without pounding the air out of the ball and sometimes not even then.

He's a superior guy on catch and shoot 3 pointers. He's a good athlete on lobs and put backs. He's a valuable player, but more of a third option on a contender.

I'd still keep him over Zion, who is a legit first option as a rim attacker, but nowhere else. If they go for Brown from the Cs I hope they can build that deal around Zion/Herb and picks (salaries work). Brown and Trey would be a good pair of starting wings and I actually think Bey and Murray are good starters until Fears and Queen are ready...

Chet is the obvious answer. He had a rough series but OKC will have to break up that core soon, so he may be attainable

I had to check and make sure this thread wasn’t 2 years old.
No one with a brain should be thinking this today.

Zion is the next guy to make major leaps forward, once he’s at the Knicks or Celtics .

Help facilitate a Giannis or Jaylen Brown trade to the Rockets and get Sengun rerouted to us. He's 23. He hates losing. He is an overachiever that embraces the work. Doesn't miss a ton of games. Very good regular season player.

Actually competes pretty damn well w Wemby, which is important in this era. Only 3 players have dropped more than 40 on Wemby (Embiid, Jokic, and Sengun). He ain't a peasant sunken in chest bitch like Chet. He will throw a shoulder chest, arse, elbows into French Bambi without fear. He simply doesn't care. The only reason why the Spurs started beating Houston as of late is they aggressively picking up Sengun full court w guards and had Wemby "guard" Amen Thompson aka just hang out in the paint and protect rim and passing lanes.

In addition to being Wemby 's biggest pain in the arse in the entire league, he is also Not a terrible playoff player (he's actually 1 of 4 players in NBA history to average 20/10/5), but Houston's roster has been clunky around him and KD was supposed to help that, but he tapped out like a bitch.

Build around Fears, Murphy and Sengun

Zion, Murray, Missi would be good trade bait.

Herb and DQ could technically be traded for better fitting parts as well.

You could also roll the dice that either Sengun or DQ improve their outside shooting and have 2 of the most skilled bigs in the game. It would be a unique matchup issue for most defenses if you surround them w an Improved Fears, Murphy, and a couple more dead eye shooters (hopefully acquired via Zion/Murray/Missi trades)

Edit: in terms of Zion/Murray/Herb/DQ/Missi- I'm sure we'd have to move some combo of this and a pick or 2 to actually acquire Sengun, but we still should have some solid flexibility left to re tool the roster around Fears/Murphy/Sengun.
Given the fact that Fears is 19 and Sengun is 23 with a skill based game that will age beautifully. We could theoretically have a 10-12 year window with those 2.

This is almost always the best way for a team like us to get very good.

Have extremely smart management that knows how to build out a roster and couple that with extreme luck

Anything else and it probably never happens (which means it probably never happens)
