Option 1: Make it a three-teamer with Houston where we also get Asik and the Rockets get the pick. This would allow us to keep all our Bird Rights, MLE, BAE, etc. Then, hold onto Nash as an expiring trade chip or just let him expire and go into the 2015 Free Agent class with the Core Four, Asik, and 15-20 mil in cap room.
Option 2: Add Ely, Ajinca, and Babbitt to the deal and you get a big enough trade exception to just absorb Asik’s deal with a trade exception. This puts you right back where you started this summer with all your Bird Rights and th option to use cap room or your MLE.
Option 3: Do Gordon for Nash and have another trade with Rivers that lets you make the Asik deal using the 150% rule (would have to add Ely, Babbitt, etc.). Then, you work on a buyout with Nash and stretch him. If you do this, you can instantly get to about $18 mil under the cap right away. Now you go after Parsons or Hayward or Ariza or Deng. Heck, make a pitch to Lebron! Okay, let’s slow down a bit, but you get my point. You can even just sit there and wait on teams to dump salaries to create more space for those big guys or to avoid the lux tax.
I don't think this a deal that will happen at all, but that Option 3 looks pretty sweet.I don't like using the stretch provision at all because it would create, what, 2 mill in dead money for 5 years? But the team could get better drastically, fast.

Stretch provision - Split the money across 2 * number of remaining seasons + 1
In Nash's case, that would be 3 seasons at ($9.7m / 3), which is roughly $3.2m for the next 3 seasons.
Not great, but better than $14m of Gordon for each of the next two seasons.
I think we also get to offset any pay that Nash gets over and above the veteran minimum if he were to sign somewhere, but the chances of that happening are slim and none.
We got virtually nil offset from Rashard Lewis' signing with the Heat because he took such a cut thanks to our $10m+ buyout of him.

Ouch. Its a good move if you KNOW that you can get a bigtime player with it.
If not, its probably better just to let Nash expire. You'd have to have a commitment in place from a really good player before you did the stretch.

That's probably why the league has the 10 day moratorium, so GMs don't make moves and then have the rug pulled out from under them.

I know the first thing I'd do is complain about how we don't have any draft picks.

We all knew he would get a good amount of interest.
Just have to find more cheap contributors.

Mavs have registered interest in New Orleans SF Al-Farouq Aminu. Long, athletic, 23-year-old former lotto pick who has had big games vs. DAL

Plan B in case they miss out on Melo.

But seriously, if I'm a team that already has a lot of pieces in place, and I can get AFA for the minimum or close to it, I'd probably do it. He is long and athletic and can rebound well, and he's still only 23 years old. As a near the end of bench guy on a playoff team, its a good move.

Could we S&T Aminu with Ajinca to mavs for Brandan Wright? I would be happy with him off the bench. He is much cheaper than Blatche too right?

This might be the furthest fall off from a Plan A ever.
