Diallo is just an expiring trade filler contract. I know he's young, raw, blah blah blah. He isn't an asset in any way other than expiring trade filler. If someone saw potential in him, thye'd simply wait until next summer and sign him for the minimum.

Diallo was our 3rd big all year last year, and still only played 10 minutes a game in just 2/3s of the games. He let guys like Asik and Okafor take minutes from him, and made us run AD/COusins/Niko into the ground all year b/c he coudln't play meaningful minutes.

The NBA season is long and I could see the appeal of getting a guy who can score 20 points 3-4 times and swinging a game. I would never play him when it counts, but Emeka could never do that for you. Either could a Trevor Booker. But on a random night against the Kings, on a back to back, AD and Niko can get a little rest and Jahlil can go out there and help you win that game.

That would be the argument, I suppose. You can also get a rep as a team that revives a guys career, after doing it with him and Rondo. Maybe that gets guys to come cheaper.

But fit and culture wise, I'd rather have Emeka. Supposedly, though, Jahlil is in really good shape. Might be too hard to pass up the chance at a cheap lotto ticket that would have cost a lot more a few years ago.
I guess he could be a project similar to Diallo. He is not much older than Diallo (about 9 months) and could be a developmental player on a minimum deal. That would allow us to deal Emeka and/or Diallo if needed. Maybe Erman can teach him to play at least a little defense.

agree on diallo, but hopefully randle alleviates the need to play him much, if at all. my question is whether or not you could play jahlil okafor any more than 10 minutes either

he's a turnstile on the other end
at the very least, i think emeka can give you 15 minutes at the 5 without blowing a lead

Jahlil is a little better from the free throw line, slightly worse on defense. I would bet his defense would improve playing alongside one of randle, mirotic, or davis. They have about the same PER for career averages. Jahlil is one inch taller, 22 years old, 3 year vet, spent 3 years with the 6er's who is good at developing talent. Higher ceiling, has a higher ceiling for trade value if he can atleast replicate what he did last season. Not, to mention he is the type of young vet our team is known to take risk on.

Jahlil played 28 games last year Emeka played 20.

Emeka is a known commodity, that knows our system, a vet, and is the better defender at this stage in their careers.

Sure, your taking a gamble with Jahlil, but atleast Jahlil can come in and create more competition for the 4th spot in the big rotation. With Emeka, you have a guy who is old and is locking down the 5th big man spot creating no competition for Diallo to push him to the next level.

Right to everything everyone is saying but Crewz said 5th big. To me, Diallo is considered our 4th big. I know that’s semantics. It also could impact on how you view Hill. Is he a wing or would you consider him a fourth “big” in some lineups? He can place some small ball 4. Again semantics.

I’d prefer Emeka for the locker room and professionalism he brings to the table. However, talent wise Jahlil is clearly superior.

Who would you guys rather have as our 5th big - Jahlil Okafor or Emeka Okafor?

I want defense ad rebounding. So Okafor.

Nwaba signed with Cleveland.

I wonder what this means for Rodney Hood...

Rockets have also "kicked the tires" on J.R. Smith.

Of course, they (Houston) may be less enticed to acquire him now that he's in legal trouble (Smith).

Was kind of hoping he would end up with the Pels. Oh well, maybe we will end up with Crawford or Young.

If I were Pels and Emeka has something left in the tank, I’d play him over Diallo. Emeka was key in the 10 game winning streak and in other games after the all star break. He is a very solid and smart defender and a better rebounder than Diallo as well. Diallo is what he is. I’d rather give his “developmental” minutes to Emeka who can give us winning minutes.

Also I’d bring in Jahlil and play him over Diallo for the 5th spot. Diallo is about 6ft 7 and isn’t elite athletically. At least Jahlil is 6ft 11 and if the Pels can get him to lock in defensively a bit, his potential is exponentially higher than Diallo’s.

I don’t dislike Diallo, but let’s be real. No team that gives Diallo 10-15 minutes is going to be a top 4-5 team in the league either today or in the future.

My issue with Jah would be that he is going to want to prove he’s worth a big contract. That’s nice from a work ethic perspective, but often creates discontent if they don’t think thy are getting their opportunity to shine.

Former high picks often press to show their value. I guess that doesn’t matter if he’s on a minimum as he just gets pulled if he doesn’t play team ball and cut if he becomes a distraction.

Brandon Jennings waived by the Bucks...interesting

Rockets trade Chinanu Onuaku and cash to Mavericks for 2020 2nd rd swap rights. Clearing room for Melo.

I would bet that graph is skewed by cousins. Post mitotic trade all we've lost was Rondo.

Anything imminent with Jahlil or are they just "kicking the tires? If they sign him, would be nice to get the Dell special 2 year deal with the 2nd year non-guaranteed.

Sounds like Jalihi got signed. There should be a report about it any second now.

538 on the pels looking ahead

LINK

quote:

A handful of things will definitely be worth watching with the Pelicans — some of which we saw for decent stretches after Boogie’s injury. In particular, the pace of play picked up considerably, and New Orleans finished the season as the fastest team in the league — something that likely wouldn’t have happened with a healthy Cousins in the lineup each night.

quote:

The Mirotic-Davis pairing is one the Pelicans are looking forward to based on the vast success it had toward the tail end of last season, when the team’s net rating with Davis on the court went from plus-3.8 per 100 possessions without Mirotic to plus-10.3 per 100 possessions with him. For some context, Davis and Cousins together produced a net rating of plus-4.2 in 2017-18,

quote:

Boogie’s inside-out game is something that few players in the league can replicate. Still, the Pelicans likely will benefit by moving on from him. First, it’s unclear when, or in what condition, he will return. But on the floor, New Orleans figures to save a handful of possessions a game without him: Cousins turned the ball over five times a night, which was the highest rate in the league — more than either James Harden or Russell Westbrook, who in 2016-17 rewrote the NBA record books with how many miscues they committed. (At 6.7 giveaways per 100 possessions, Cousins lost the ball more than the next two-highest rotation Pellies in usage — Davis and Holiday — did combined last year, per Basketball-Reference.com.)

aslo touches on randle's offense, and the dire lack of size at the wings which likely will set the pels ceiling until they improve it
