No, I'm also concerned about how he would affect the cap and tax situations next year.

I can't see how it would have a major impact on our flexibility next year when it comes to signing a free agent. If Benson is willing to pay the tax, then I don't see how that effects the average fan.

I'm also concerned about Oden being incapable of playing and taking up a roster spot that could be used for a healthy center of any kind.

We've already got that guy in Stiesma. Is another end of the bench guy really that more valuable than taking a gamble on Oden?

Wait, are you implying that's a bad thing?

Okay, and if Benson is unwilling to pay the tax? Then I, the average fan, am affected.

There are more than 2 options in many of life's situations.

You think we are going after Oden or anyone else without Benson knowing the tax implications?

How?

So give me some other alternatives then. If you don't like Oden because you don't think he can ever play again that is fine, but harping on his salary and the cap/tax implications doesn't really prove your point.

I can agree with that. I'm not dazzled into thinking the promise the guy showed 6 years ago means a great deal right now, but I also don't see that much downside.

The money isn't irrelevant, but if it's a one year deal with a team option for year 2, I'm fine with that gamble. They have Withey and Steimsma. Oden would be the 3rd center and 5th big, not a starter or key piece.

Oden does have talent, even if he never fulfills the lofty expectations. It's not likely he stays healthy, but even at 15mpg for $3million, he is a better buy than minimum $$ for a sub replacement level big like Aldrich to be your 3rd string center.

I've been pretty consistent about calling him damaged and or broken. That doesn't make the money/cap/tax irrelevant. It is part of the significant risk that people keep downplaying while playing up the "Shaq-esque" (lol) upside.

The money isn't irrelevant, and the upside is a bit overblown at this point, but the monetary risk is clearly worth the reward.

I really don't have a problem with that, either. However, the rumors and some fans' exuberance imply they will give up more. That's what I'm scared of happening.

No doubt. He has a sweet stroke and is definitely large. Can he defend the P&R on rickety knees, though?

How many games played, though? Will he be available every night? If not, can that affect chemistry?

I agree. Some people have lost their minds over Oden. It's the summer, it happens.

What comforts me is that Bynum didnt get 2 years guaranteed and he's only missed one season, not 5. I seriously doubt they go all in on Oden.

Well if hes the 5th big, he's not a make or break player. If he's healthy and able (you are right that there is no guarantee he is able to play well), its a nice bonus. If not, he's still your 5th big and doesnt derail the teams' plans.

as well as or better than Lopez? probably.

...the team has been in contact with him and has seen him play. They probably have a decent idea about his knees.

No, they haven't seen him play. He won't be cleared to play until after someone signs him. Very convenient.
