Not drafting Garland killed this team.

I was on record for drafting him. Still can’t believe Griff traded down out of a lotto spot and then proceeded to strike out not once but twice. It was said a few times, but this isn’t the NFL. He would have solved so many issues we are having right now.
You have to hit when given gifts like that trade, and Griff just threw that pick away and basically threw away Lonzo by not getting anything meaningful for him.

Killed is a bit dramatic. Long term he’d definitely be better than CJ, but short term are they really that different to think we wouldn’t be in free fall now with Garland and another young player Willie wouldn’t give minutes to instead of CJ?

While not as good as Garland, my #1 at 4 that year was Hunter, who would have also been really good for us. Garland was my 2 or 3. But my other part of the trio was Culver

You did argue that Garland should have been the pick at #4, but you also said this:

Agree, think Garland has the most potential at becoming a star outside the top 3, but once he signed with Klutch, don’t blame Griff for taking a hard pass on him.

Bronc bumped that thread awhile back. He was also in the Garkand camp.

how would it be any different than just about every other draft pick we've had the last decade that hasnt panned out? At a certain point you have to just admit this franchise is broken for top to bottom. Sucks but is what it is.

There’s also another draft day thread that said he would have been my pick if I had to choose right now.

You not accounting for CJ’s salary and who we could have added if he were not on the team to fix the other issues.

On draft day, yeah you advocated for Garland. What I posted was after the draft where you gave Griff a pass.

I was ceremoniously piled on for being pissed we moved back. Questioning the decision of someone like Jax
I very specifically said to anyone that would listen that if you look at his body of work, had he not had his freak injury, Garland would be considered in tier 2 with Ja that year.
He had all the skills you look for in a modern Point Guard. It was actually frustrating at times cause it seemed so obvious. Including his fit with Zion/BI.
That all said, I don't know that it killed this team. You can overcome stuff like that. What you cant do is overcome multiple instances of that. And that feels like a lot of Griff's career.
I let up on it, but he really is a Rube Goldberg GM more often than you'd like. He puts together these complex trades and moves that on the surface look good, they win the press conference, get fans excited a bit, but then you look back in a year or two and just go "huh, yeah, that really didn't do anything for us, we are sort of barely any further along than we were before."
And I think that sums up his first season, where literally none of his moves past trading AD and lucking into Zion worked out or are a part of our long-term anymore. Same with year two and Steven Adams and the Jrue trade. Then it was Graham, our spot starter and future 6-man of the year turned negative contract(where we struck out trying to ruin our franchise by godfathering Lowry).
It often feels like with Griff he takes 1 and a quarter steps forward followed by 1 step back(that he convinces you temporarily is actually a leap forward).

I'm not a draft expert but it was obvious that Garland was the big swing move. I don't know why they didn't take it, but a guard that can shoot from anywhere has a lot of value in today's game.
The results are pretty clear that this team has not been good when evaluating raw talent. This was another failure, just the other direction.

That's kind of the issue though, because Hayes was an even bigger swing with less of a chance of hitting. Our scouting let us down big time because a lot of people on here knew Jax was going to be a huge project the night we drafted him.

He wouldn’t be as good as he is with Cleveland because we stunt growth of young players, we don’t develop. Hell he might be on the bench next to Dyson

Everyone knew he was a project. He had barely played basketball. The failure was in not realizing he didn’t have the passion he needed to get better. I think also Griffin has a strange value function for players. It feels like the league is moving on from the team full of lengthy wings archetype and Griffin is still living in that world. And what’s crazy is that type of team only worked once really (Torontos championship).

Length on the wings is still important, but outside shooting is more important, and for whatever reason, Griff/Trajan do not value that at all or they believe that anyone can learn how to shoot.
Since this current FO has taken over, we've drafted and kept Zion, Jax, NAW, Kira, Trey, Herb, Dyson and Liddell.
8 players drafted and only one of them (Trey) where shooting was their strongest tool coming out of college. That's either arrogance in believing they could teach shooting or ignorance in not understanding what it takes to win in this NBA. Either way, it's bad.

Certainly. But the concept of 5 lengthy switchable defensive wings is just not a consistently winning recipe. It worked in Toronto because they had 3 of the best in the game at the position. I think they clearly had some arrogance that Vinson could fix the shooting problem. The reality is much more complicated. It seems Vinsons reputation was built by a clearly amazing student in Lonzo.

We’ve been chasing that mistake since we traded down. The whole rebuild of our team would be drastically different if we just stand pat and take garland. We almost certainly don’t waste a first and 4 seconds on signing Devonte Graham. Kira almost certainly isn’t our pick next year and I doubt we target CJ as our biggest move since the AD trade. We probably don’t waste time with Eric Bledsoe or pursue Lowry.
I’m not saying Garland makes us a title team because Zion would still be 40 pounds to heavy to hold up in the nba, but our team would look totally different today.
We may well have just rolled with a jrue/garland backcourt these last few years.

Jrue was never staying.
It was such a terrible trade for us though.
