New article says Rivers having the worst season of all time

Insider so no link, but
on replacement player
quote:
Rivers projects to rate nearly seven wins worse than a replacement-level player..... which would be the worst WARP score in the 34 seasons on record, starting with 1979-80, the first NBA season with the 3-point line.

So a "replacement player" is what, exactly? It's the type of player who is easy to find when a team needs a replacement. To find a good example, look no further than Hornets guard Brian Roberts, who went undrafted out of Dayton before starring overseas and signing with the Hornets after a successful stint in summer league. Roberts has been far more effective than Rivers as both a scorer and distributor while making the NBA's minimum salary.

Yeah, he's definitely more worthless than DJ Mbenga

He's been absolutely terrible, there's no getting around it. That doesn't mean he won't eventually be decent, but he's an awful player right now.
I keep hearing a lot of, "he's only 18 months out of HS," talk. As if that's something unique to him. There's been a consistent flow of guys coming straight from HS, or 1 and done to the league, since the mid 90s. He's in the same spot that every other elite HS prospect of the last decade+ has been in, except his not riding the bench like some of them did and he's much worse than those who played.

I haven't caught the last few games but hasn't he played a little better recently?

He definitely got off to a rough start, and these advanced stats can be nice, but there's no way he is having the worst season of all time.

Considering the way he's played recently, I think by the time this season is over that he won't even be close to that title.

Had an atrocious start, then a nice 7 game stretch recently where he was shooting just under 50% and putting up around 12 points per game, but he's 6 of 24 in his last 3 games. It would be stupid to call him a bust this early, but he's played like dogshit and needs to start improving soon. Maybe when EG comes back he'll feel less pressure.

Ideally Rivers would still be in college right now, or on the Jeremy Lamb plan in OKC. He doesn't play, but had a nice Dleague stint just to get some basketball in.

The only area he's decent in right now is his 3 pt shooting.

They should probably watch a game and see exactly how awful Roberts is at playing with a team. That would change their minds.

and this isn't about whether Rivers is better than, it's about how bad he is playing.

Right, because advanced metrics aren't taking over sports or anything.

There was a time when Jason Kidd was considered the worst shooter ever!!!!
Statistically he was. In fact, whenever a shooter has a sub 40/30/80 season, they term it a Jason Kidd.
Now Kidd is one of the better spot-up 3 point shooters in the league.
Things change.
Although I hope Rivers develops quicker than Kidd...he is already much smarter.
