Diamond Sports Group reached a one-season deal with the NBA that essentially guarantees that the Bally Sports RSNs will continue to carry NBA games through the end of this season. Diamond and the NBA unveiled some of the deal’s details in a bankruptcy court filing this afternoon. The court still needs to okay the deal before it can move forward.

The NBA likes this deal because it gives the league more flexibility as Diamond tries to navigate its way through bankruptcy. Regardless of the current length of some of the NBA teams’ Bally Sports deals, all are set to end after this season.

Great news!!!

After this season, the deal has the NBA reclaiming the rights to the 13 teams that have deals with Bally Sports. The teams could work out new deals with the Diamond-owned RSNs at that point.

I sure hope no team is dumb enough to do this.

We didn't think they would be dumb enough to do it last time either.

So what you are saying is that Bally's was in the middle of negotiations with the NBA when the (very unfortunate) login issues were happening.

Interesting.

Why dont the teams do their own streaming service? Seems like the most logical way to go

Because direct to consumer doesn't pay as well since there are so few fans willing to pay. The NBA or one of the teams did a study last year and the average team was making $30 million with their local deals and going direct to consumer would only get them $8 million.

Depends on how big of a check Gayle will get, she’s proven that’s all that matters

Well those local deals appear to be drying up because the networks cant make money either in most markets

Which is why they plan to sell them to a major streamer that can monetize them better. Live Sports is still big money, that's why the NBA is expecting to triple their price on the national TV deal. It seems like the plan is either to bundle the local rights with the national deal in 2 years, or find another partner like Amazon, Apple or maybe Max to take them, possibly as soon as next year with the Bally's deal ending.

I think the opt back in clause in this deal exists because if the NBA can't find a good deal for the local rights next year, they might just put things on hold with Bally's for another season until they negotiate the national TV deal after the 24-25 season.

All that matters is that Joel and AD are retained. I do not care other than that.

If the NBA was smart, they’d televise the games on an App for free. Then they should sell national tv ads that would be inserted into all the games. A portion of the ads could be held out to local advertisers. Split the National ads per team and give the local ads directly to the team. Obviously the broadcasts would have to be paid for first.
