Well definitely let us know if you find some new information out. I really want to hear our FO's side of this story.

Didn't we discuss this possibility a few weeks ago and everyone was like "He loves NOLA", "best hornets team eva!"

He didnt sign many FAs b/c he had no cap room. But go look at the trades he's made in the past and you'll see why we trust him

I think it is ridiculous that Dell hasn't even contacted him.
They talked Sunday, he agreed with Phoenix Tuesday.
I guess Dell will learn not to miss the Monday call next time.

He's made some good moves, but he also gave up a 1st round pick to get Bayless.
I understood the move at the time, desperate attempts to keep CP3, but look at what went around that pick.
Who everyone is drooling over on this board, Montiejunas, went one selection after our pick.
Hindsight is of course 20/20, but...Rivers, Gordon (possibly), Davis and Montiejunas.
Not knocking Dell whatsoever. You just said go back and take a look at some of the trades he's made. So I did.

Not really disagreeing, just saying that if you're a GM in any sport and can argue that you've hit at a ~60% clip on trades/draft picks, you're above average IMO. Especially in basketball where you're dealing with a total roster of like 15 people. As a young guy I think he's managed a firestorm of epic proportions as well as you could possibly expect. Because of that I think he gets the benefit of the doubt until now, but IMO this is like a reset. What he does from here on out is a new slate, if he proves to be incapable people will turn on him fast.

my original post wasn't to bash him for what he has done up to now. Just questioning the recent turn of events and the fact that none of those guys have ever handled courting a free agent of this caliber.
It's simply not the same as making a trade.

i mean even with the spurs, how many big FAs did they handle during his time there?
demps is a scouting/personnel guy and he's shown a pretty good eye for talent, but this is likely teh first major FA he's had to really deal with in his career in management (directly or indirectly)
hopefully this is a learning experience

yeah, demps was 4th in charge in San Antonio

Like SFP said, Monty and Demps are still pretty new to their jobs. There will/have been learning curves that they go through. But they have shown how good they are at their respective jobs. Will they make mistakes? sure but I also think they'll learn from them.

quote:How do you know they talked Sunday? I have to agree that I am disappointed in the way Demps and Williams have handled this. If you publicly say that a guy is your best player and top priority, why would you not be in constant contact with him reassuring him that he is your man? This does not give Gordon an excuse for acting like he is, but to give Williams and Demps a free pass is ridiculous. They are supposed to be professionals.

Agreed. While I think that
1) Demps made it abundantly clear that he wanted to build the team around Gordon
2) Gordon, or at least his agent, know that all the negotiations that made sense for the Hornets to do already took place last season, and that there's no point to negotiate once other teams can start making offers to the RFA Gordon
3) Gordon is being a huge bitch here
hopefully Dell will know from now on that many NBA players are huge divas used to being coddled all their lives, and that even though it doesn't make sense to non-stop keep up with a player in Gordon's situation, they should do it anyway.
It's like a wife going on vacation. You've told her that you love her many a times, she's only been gone 5 days (which is the amount of time Gordon last spoke to Demps), you're wearing her ring and she's wearing yours, but if you don't keep checking up on her, she's going to be in full blown count mode when she gets back to town.

Fwiw I'd take gortat Marshall and a 1 over gordon
Posted on 7/6/12 at 9:59 pm to Elleshoe
If we can get PHO's 1st unprotected and Gortat in a deal, sure. That's highly unlikely. I think the suns hope to nab gordon and compete next year
itd be counterproductive to do that trade but you never know

I was for that before, but now I think I'd prefer Gordon since the Suns have improved their team with Dragic and possibly Beasley (if his head is in the right place), so an unprotected first rounder isn't as valuable as it would have been a few days ago. Gortat is great, but we won't be competitors within 2 years unless Davis and Rivers become what we hope they do VERY quickly. Gortat will be getting his big contract when he's 30, and while he doesn't have that many miles on him and an unathletic center like him shouldn't have a huge dropoff as he gets older, I just don't like the sound of that.
It would give us an assload of cap space next year, but I question whether we can convince any great players to come here.
