Kobe Brown (Missouri) would love to find a 2nd and grab him

Looking at the draft for a cheap big that could help and Brown keeps coming up.

-Older player that got better in college
-Standing reach over 8’10”
-Big frame (250lbs)
-Good NCAA production (16/6/2.5)
-55/45/80 shooting splits (on 3.2 3pt/gm)
-Played in a major conference

The drawback seems to be his lack of explosive movement stats, which are just ok, but not terrible, particularly for a guy over 250lbs.

Right now he is being projected as a back of draft guy, but I would love to snap him up and let him and Liddell battle for minutes behind Zion.

I'll be surprised if we come out of the draft with 2 picks. Just not enough roster spots to go around.

I would be perfectly happy with a roster something like…

CJ/Jose/Kira
BI/Trey/Dyson
Herb/Naji
Zion/Liddell/*Brown
JV/Larry/Willy

That leaves one spot open if Liddell is kept on a 2 way. If we can use #14 to upgrade a spot somewhere then I’m even happier.

**edit-accidentally had trey twice

I keep reading Kobe Brown as Kobe Bryant.

We might have the beefiest power forward depth chart in the league with those 3.

Kobe Brown is a good player, gives me Grant Williams vibes as a guy who was very productive in the SEC as a primary option but lack of athleticism and size relegates him to more of good bench player role in the NBA. I'd take a chance on him IF we somehow get a 2nd rounder (I doubt it tbh)

Outside of Jokic has a 2nd round big ever worked out? I remember in the Demps era always needing a center but not having a 1st so 2nd round guys got brought up regularly. I don't remember any of them really sticking, at least not as more than end of rotation players.

There’s a few but it’s rare, especially for a true center. Draymond, Paul Milsap, and Carlos Boozer are probably the best examples. Robert Williams was a late first but yeah very very hard to find a big late in the draft.

I still don’t get this love fest for Liddell. We need legit vets in the front court. If our back up PFs are EJ Liddell and a rookie 2nd round pick, like what do you think is gonna happen? Zions will miss games, we need someone proven that we know can give us good minutes.

I know it’s an extremely small sample size but Liddell looked too small and not quite a good enough athlete during summer ball. I hope I’m wrong but if he’s on the roster next season it’ll probably be another 2 way contract.

Liddell is on a 2 way. Not sure why you are negative about that. He does not prevent the team from adding to the frontcourt.

100% was my thought, except Brown shot better from deep and is bigger than Grant Williams.

Brown’s height seems short, but his arms are really long (his standing reach is the same as Leonard Miller’s) and actually dead on for a typical NBA PF (8’10.5”).

Liddell’s profile is very similar, but he is just a bit smaller (about like Williams).

Big guys that can shoot and were productive in college.

If the minimum standard for “working out” is Jokic then there certainly aren’t going to be many.

If the standard is a good bench player/spot starter then those players are more prevalent.

Christian Koloko, Jaylin Williams, and Jabari Walker played a good bit as rookies last year, from the 2021 class no one has played as much as Herb from the 2nd round, but I like Jericho Sims, and Robinson-Earl has found some good time on the court.

Xavier Tillman was a good 2nd round find for Memphis in 2020, as was Paul Reed for the 76ers, although Kenyon Martin Jr is clearly the 2nd round star for that class. Nick Richard’s, who the Pels drafted, has played a good bit for Charlotte lately too.

Nic Claxton and Daniel Gafford were both 2nd round picks in 2019, and so were THT, Bol Bol, and Jalen McDaniels.

It’s certainly not a guarantee, but there are players that can help a roster available in the 2nd every year.

I didn’t mean it like that, just meant that I don’t want to have our backup PFs be rookies or unproven guys considering how much Zion gets hurt. I’d be thrilled if Liddell or a rookie we drafted became good players.

That’s all I needed to see. I just remember when we were desperate for a center with a pulse in the Demps era we had a hard time finding one.

This assumes we don’t flip the likes of Kira and Willy for picks, current or future. Or cut Temple.

Nikola Mirotic worked pretty good for us while we had him.

But that also assumes we don't re-sign Richardson, bring over Matkovic, and you're assuming you can move Kira without taking a contract back and assuming the team doesn't bring a vet into the frontcourt. That game works both ways.

Kira’s on an expiring deal. Someone would take that just to take a flyer on him for the RFA rights in case he panned out.

Considering the number of draft night trades we have made under Griff, it is highly likely we shift a lot of names from the roster one way or another.

We could move JV, Willy, Kira, Temple, or a number of other players depending on what Griff thinks he can get back.

The only guy on that list with even a sliver of trade value is JV.
