Know anybody that followed the Jazz to Utah after they left NOLA?

Although I had a Pistol Pete poster on my wall, I didn’t follow the Jazz in the late 70’s as I didn’t become an NBA fan until the early 80’s.

With no team here, I followed the teams of Bird and Magic, then later MJ. I didn’t realize until after NOLA got a team again, how annoying it is for other fanbases to see front-runner fans, like I was, root on the star-studded faves.

It made me think, had I been a NOLA Jazz fan, would I have rooted for the Utah Jazz in lieu of having no-team or resented them leaving and followed a front-runner elsewhere. Then I wondered if there are die-hard Utah fans living here post the Jazz leaving NOLA.

As a kid in the 90s I was a Utah Jazz fan completely independent from them having formerly been in New Orleans.

Personally I was a rockets fan until we got a team. Grew up in Houston as a lil one and when we moved to New Orleans, most of the Rockets games were still available on tv. I was a bit too young to enjoy the rockets championships. The main teams I remember are the ones with Old Hakeem, Old Scottie, Old Charles Barkley and Old Clyde Drexler. Then the era after with Francis and Mobley.

It’ll be no surprise then when I tell you I went to Shaq/Kobe until the Hornets moved here when my front-runner days officially ended.

Bird, Magic, MJ, Shaq/Kobe brought me a lot of indirect sports satisfaction with their championships, but it’s hard to imagine now that I was ever a fan of the Celtics, Bulls or Lakers. Seems like blasphemy.

I dont think people followed them much when they moved because you could not watch them. Back in the day no internet, nba TV coverage was very little

I grew up a Bulls fan bc of WGN (was a Cubs fan for the same reason)

I went to a lot of the NO Jazz games. When they left, people here rooted against them, which is understandable, since they left the city. As others mentioned, not much of any basketball coverage in NO then, since there was no real tv presence. Atl actually played several of their "home" games in NO one year (about 10 if I recall), but the were sparsely attended, except for a game against the Celtics.

If you are like most people, you wouldn't have rooted for/followed them once they left.

Do you think the folks in Baltimore cheered for the Colts after they moved to Indianapolis? Or the folks in Brooklyn supported the Dodgers in L.A.? Or more recently, do you think the folks in Seattle give a flying frick about the Oklahoma City Thunder?

Hell, no. In fact, the opposite is usually true; you cheer AGAINST them and wish ill will on them.

I was 11-15 years old when the Jazz were in New Orleans. Went to many, many games while in jr. high; was a big fan with lots of merch, still have a personally autographed (to me) photo of Pete Maravich framed on the wall of my office.

The minute they left for Utah they were dead to me. And what made it worse and still irks me is that they kept the name "JAZZ", which not only makes no sense there, but is an obvious and constant reminder of the move. Even though we have a new team, whenever I see the 'Utah Jazz' on TV, it rubs it in every time that they were originally our team and their cheap-arse Mormon owner took them from us.

Oh, for sure.

Maybe I'm thinking of someone rare like my NOLA uncle, who for whatever strange reason became a (long-suffering) Cleveland Indians fan in the early 60's and followed that (once-unfortunate) franchise for decades solely through newspaper box-scores/weekly sports mags as they were rarely on national TV, pre-cable, pre-internet.

That's cool AF.

Agree with your post. I likely would have hated them. When the Saints flirted with moving to S.A. post-Katrina, my blood was boiling at just the possibility.

As a die-hard Saints fan I can tell you that if they ever leave NO I’ll no longer be a fan. I’d likely walk away from pro football altogether, which I’m tempted to do even now.

I had a friend in the late ‘80s who was a Redskins and Mets fan. Both because his sports fandom developed during the years preceding late 80s. Never could get it. Of course today he’s all Saints. Had a couple friends who were Florida St. fans in the ‘90s - all LSU now.

I think some younger people gravitate towards the “hot” team to associate themselves with a winner, partially due to wanting bragging rights and maybe having some sort of insecurity?!

As far as baseball goes I’m a Braves fan. Those who don’t know me might assume I jumped on the bandwagon in the ‘90s. But I was watching the Braves on TBS during the ‘80s when they were disgraceful. Made winning so much more satisfying. Same with Saints winning the Super Bowl.

We didn’t have a team, should he have cheered for a team with shitty players?

I guess I can relate to guys like me who gravitated to various teams from various other cities mainly because their home-town didn't have a team of that sport. But it kills me every time to see local fans rooting or supporting other football/basketball teams with the Saints/Pels here.

One white-guy/hip-hop-fanatic I knew, who actually had Saints season tickets, showed up to a party wearing a "hip" Michael Vick Falcons jersey. GTFO. You couldn't pay me to wear a rival's jersey no matter how much I was entertained by Vick's electric performances.

I mean. There’s better ways to pick a team than just picking a front runner. Those are the worst type of fans.

What’s the process for picking a favorite team when there is no local team?

I was a big Bulls fan in the 90’s when I was little because Scottie Pippen is my all time favorite player. Then I liked that Pistons team with Rasheed and Ben Wallace, Rip Hamilton, Billups and Tayshaun Prince. Once we got a team with DWest and CP3 though I’ve been a fan since.

Exactly. Growing up I just latched on to players since we had no team: Nique, KJ, Penny, Iverson...

Literally the day Baron Davis was traded was the day I went all in on the Hornets. If this franchise were to ever leave I certainly would not follow, and I’d imagine the attitude was similar for NO Jazz fans.

Yeah if the Pelicans moved I’d probably stop being a pelicans fan.

I was. Flew out there a couple times in the 90's to watch a game. Was also a La Tech guy so that helped my loyalty.
