Knicks will be heavy on Lonzo come free agency

While Houston’s combo guard Victor Oladipo is very available, Pelicans pass-first point guard Lonzo Ball is higher on Leon Rose’s list. However, the Pelicans have not tipped their hand on whether they’re ready to move their ever-improving playmaker, even though he is a restricted free agent this summer as his rookie contract expires

ESPN’s cap guru Bobby Marks told The Post he doubts the Pelicans would match an offer sheet that starts higher than $18 million. The max starting number is $28 million. The Post has learned the Knicks, with plenty of cap room, would be heavily on Ball’s radar as a restricted free agent. – via Marc Berman @ New York Post

Remember that things we hear now is all about Trade Deadline posturing, not Free Agency.
The way it’s worded “on Ball’s radar” sounds like another Klutch leak. They must want him out of NOLA bad.

Maybe, but even if they didn’t have such cynical motives this is pretty in line with the sort of aggressive posturing Klutch has tried to manufacture and foster in the past.
Sometimes ultimately to their client’s detriment, see Noel and Morris.

AKA Trade him to us now or lose him for nothing this offseason! derp

Makes it sound like their asking price was 18 this past offseason and we clearly offered a lot less than that.

Actually if I remember the reports that is sort of how the talks reportedly broke down.
We came in at like around 12-14 and they wanted 18-20.
And parsing the language, Marks isn’t saying he heard specifically, it reads more like speculation. Speculation I would assume he is putting together based on those reports about our earlier talks where things supposedly broke down around that number. Therefore speculating our walk away number might be 18. But I’m not sure that was ever the case.

Definitely sounds like a threat to small and mid market teams thinking about trading for him. The Knicks will make you overpay if you trade for Lonzo.

I could definitely see Klutch going all out to get Ball to the Knicks.
I think if push came to shove they would pay him 20, but I don't think they would go higher than that.
If Griffin is getting indications that he's likely to sign a high dollar offer sheet with the Knicks, he better be looking to make the best deal possible for him.

Yeah, it is somehwat of an empty threat. This isn't Sean Marks shooting his load all over and making life difficult or eveyrone. Leon Rose is not going to drastically overpay Lonzo just because the Knicks have cap space.
I do think Lonzo is going to eventually get an offer that makes us uncomfortable though.

Alright, not sure there is actually much here.
If you read the article you get to this line:
Which is framed as a citation that would seemingly confirm that assertion.
But if you follow the link all you get is another speculative piece with one more Ball related citation, this:
Follow that citation. and you simply get a blanket assertion in a speculative piece where this is stated:
So basically the Post doesn’t really have anything new to add. They are packaging old reporting in a somewhat disengrnuous way and coupling it with additional speculation. Which is, Knicks may or may not be monitoring Ball and several other guards including Rozier and Oladipo. Which was something they reported, without sourcing, in February.

That is why the Knicks have always kept an eye on Hornets point guard Terry Rozier and young Pelicans playmaker Lonzo Ball (who would probably be more of a summer transaction).

You almost have to trade him just because of how hard Klutch seems to be pushing. #3 in NOLA is not how you get Ruffles money.

Zion is a great wagon for ball to latch onto

frick it, make the deal Griff. Go full blockbuster and see if it works out.
NYK: Ball, JJ, PJ Tucker
Pacers: Obi Toppen
Rockets: Adams, Dallas 1st via NYK
Pels: Kevin Knox, Frank Ntlikina, Myles Turner, Oladipo
Works for all I think, even though Dipo won't stay, opens up a shitload of cap space, and allows Griff to sell to Zion and Bi that he's trying to get a 3rd "superstar" next to them, while not saying "we can't pay Ball what he wants".
If they want him bad enough, they'll pay it

You don’t have to trade him right now if the offer isn’t there. Sign and trade is always there.

One problem with banking on that is the two rumored suitors for him have the cap space to just sign him to an offer sheet, which at that point its match the sheet or lose him for nothing. They don't need to do a sign and trade for him.

They can just sign him.
If they are willing to do a S&T it would be for peanuts.

Put the sentence in this order, match it up against Knicks history, and I wouldn't bet against it.

The Pelicans can match. They can release their own anonymous leaks that they’re prepared to offer him $X in the off-season and see how bad NY wants him. It’s not trade him ASAP or automatically lose him for nothing.

I like the sound of that.
