If during the season, Melo makes it clear he's not signing extension... denver knows they are going to lose him. It probably won't take too much to trade for melo with it being you are only guaranteed to have melo till the end of the year and he'll be an unrestricted free agent.
Peja has an expiring deal and plays the 3.
Any type of young talent in addition to that makes it enticing for denver as melo won't be lost for nothing.

Unless we give Denver some solid young talent to go along with Peja, Denver would never trade us Melo for Peja just because Peja is expiring. Melo is also expiring. It would make no sense.
