We're a below avg 3pt shooting team this season. With the way Zion is creating looks, that makes it a bit worse as well IMO.

well if we are keeping Lonzo, then the position that needs to be better at shooting is the center or PG/SG position.

In that same 15g stretch as Lonzo

JJ 47%
Lonzo 46%
Bledsoe 39%
Ingram 38%

A month ago I just wanted him gone. I didn't care what compensation. He's proved me to be an idiot.

I'd keep him at a reasonable cost. Dude is very coachable and is not a team cancer. Seems like a good kid in a game of prima donnas. Strictly a talented, complimentary player who can do great things at times. He's still young.

Tonight we dine on small sample sizes

In saying that, I do think this massive increase in efficiency is (relatively) sustainable

I think Lonzo could still be traded for Beal or LaVine. Not for less.

yes but depends on what he wants.

Not sure if its b/c he is handling the ball less, but seems like he is making less bone head turnovers.

You mean the same sample size that many were using to determine that we should trade him for a fake 2nd rounder earlier in the season?

His Usage rate is up but his turnovers are WAY down.

Year | Usage% | TOV%
19-20 | 18.5% | 21.1%
20-21 | 19.8% | 13.2%

His assists are down, 5.2, but I'd say that's a good number until he gets a better handle on attacking the basket.

what is usage%? what does that mean?

B/c he's still bringing the ball up the court and dribbling a good bit, but he's not involved in PnR's as the ball handler too often, or actually initiating the offense (bringing the ball up the court and making an easy pass to Zion or BI isn't initiating anythign), and you can tell his offensive role isn't that of a creator off the dribble, but he is finding ways to do positive things when he's run off the 3 point line.

Do they count usage as dribbling up half court and then passing it off?

The % of possessions you "use" or basically end with you.

So basically, shot attempts, FT attempts, turnovers.

No, usage rate is strictly how many possessions the player either makes a shot, misses a shot or turns the ball over. So considering Lonzo is turning the ball over less this year, his overall increased usage rate is due to having more shot attempts. Usage rate shouldn’t be used in a vacuum bc it is a limited stat, but it can be used as part of the story. For example, when you couple the fact that Lonzo’s shooting percentages have improved this year, while increasing his usage (an increase that was driven by shot attempts rather than turnovers), it’s safe to say our eye test of his development is also being reflected positively in a statistical manner.
