I'm really frustrated because this was avoidable. We told the NBA through every means available to us. Through sending in film, through speaking to everybody in the officials department, and everybody in basketball operations that the way they were officiating Zion was going to get him injured.

And quite frankly he's injured now because of the open season that there's been on Zion Williamson in the paint. He has been absolutely mauled in the paint on a regular basis to the point that other players have said to him "I'm going to keep doing this to you because they don't call it." So there is more violence encouraged in the paint against Zion Williamson than any player I've seen since Shaq. It was egregious and horrific then and the same is true now.

I'm particularly disappointed in myself and our organization. We did a very poor job apparently of explaining with the proper sense of urgency how severe this situation was from a league perspective. That's my fault. This situation is something that very much should have been able to be avoided if we were protecting our players in the way that we should be in the league and this just was not done.

Again, I'm very disappointed that he's not going to be available here for the foreseeable future anyway, but I'm more disappointed in us quite frankly. That we weren't able to bring the appropriate sense of urgency to the league conversation around the way he was officiated.

Hate that it took Zion getting hurt to get us here, but this is the type of energy i've been begging to to get from this organization.

Tired of all the arse kissing and nice guy act while we get shite on over and over.

I read that all in Griff’s voice ...

Pretty masterful critique.

A very eloquent way of saying frick you. Letting the league know, yes frick you, but also I’m sorry, not because we weren’t saying frick you earlier and showing the receipts, but probably should have said frick you even louder, because seriously, frick you.

…these are the sorts of things where having a snake oil salesman like Griff comes in handy. Don’t think any GM in the league could do that more perfectly

Gayle must have given Griff and SVG a blank check for fines to go public now.

I'd also say doing this after an injury to a player so popular the Pels got 30 national TV games probably gets ESPN/Turner interested in the issue and asking Silver if they have any plans to fix it. If Griff does this a week ago after the Denver game where an under .500 stays under .500, nobody cares.

I mean if you watched the presser, there was very clearly no snake oil lol. Guy was about to cry he was so furious. That level of emotion can’t be faked.

I didn’t mean it as he didn’t believe what he said. The guy knows how to weaponize language to his benefit. It’s what any good salesman/speaker has.

This was no different. Him really believing it only makes it more potent.

maybe if griff was less concerned with concession prices in the arena and more focused on shite like this we would have had a different outcome

Did people not read/listen to it? Or are people just hellbent on trashing Griff no matter the facts?

It’s clear he and the organization were being proactive on this, putting together and sending in film, making calls through the proper channels. This is simply the straw that broke everything.

Gotcha. His authenticity mixed in with his usual sales skills and overall command of the english language was especially potent in this presser. Let’s hope the league office takes note.

Z averages 8-9 fts a game. If this message gets through, you’d think he’d see an uptick to at least 12-13 a game. Z actually already gets quite a few double digit free throw attempt games, the games that make absolutely zero sense are when he shoots 5 or less even after driving to the basket 25 times.

Zion averages 8.7 a game while Embiid averages 11.1 playing 2 less minutes a game. The league is actually protecting Embiid. So they have no excuses allowing teams to hack Zion as much as they're allowed to.

So just curious, what's your prediction for Griff's excuses next year?

Absolutely.

And at the end of the day this is a case of the league cutting off it’s own nose to spite its face.

The potential future face of the league may now be out anywhere from 3-12 months depending on severity and how it heals, almost certainly doesn’t go to the Olympics, the biggest international marketing tool for the NBA, in a year where almost none of the vet superstars are likely to attend, with a decent chance he misses some of next season, all because they didn’t protect one of the most marketable players in a generation.

And the thing is, the facts are entiriely on Griff’s side here. There is no angle that doesn’t rely on intellectual dishonesty to defend what went on.

It’s fractured. Unless I missed it we don’t know how bad yet.

The range on healing for that can be anywhere from a couple months to it still not being right in a year. A year would be worst case scenario, typical occupational therapy is 3-6 months, so him missing some time next season isn’t out of the question .

And you have to imagine that given the genuine emotion from Griff, this probably isn’t the most ideal scenario for a fracture from a medical standpoint.

I mean, we know that the injury happened in the 3rd quarter and Zion finished the game with it fractured.

Not even close

Re: Zion: The recovery timeline for most fractures are dependent on treatment (i.e. surgery or not). The average time lost for a NBA player w/ a ring finger fracture who avoided surgery is 5.3 games. The number goes up ~3x (15.7) if surgery is needed.
