I don't know.

Riley in New York and Pre wade/Lebron Miami?

Kareem, Magic, Worthy? Sure. DWade and Shaq? Ok. Wade/Lebron? Yes sir. Riley did work assembling that team

Ewing and ??? john Starks? Not so much. Zo and Eddie Jones? Good players but... Could coaching overcome shortcomings?

Has Phil ever NOT had MJ, Pippen, Kobe, Shaq, Gasol on his team?

I don't know anything about Auerbach. Pretty sure he and Russell are tied in together though, right?

Wanna talk influence and team building? Poppovich and Buford

The dataset too tangled to give a shining, clear signal, and let's just make it clear that I agree a team needs both and more, as I noted originally . . . we're just spinning yarn on which is more influential.

Maybe I'll do a data analysis.

I'd look at what Phil did after Shaq, what Kobe did without Phil, etc.

We are assaulted with this player stuff, I think because it sells, and it makes fans think they can do some damage when they can't if they can just get `the guy'. Truth just may be . . . these are not the droids you are looking for . . . move along . . .

Look at the players he acquired or nearly acquired since arriving in Miami-

in his first year
a 25 year old Alonzo Mourning- thought to be franchise center (and in many respects was)

a 30 year old Tim Hardaway (who had enough in the tank to give you two seasons of 10+Win Shares)

playoffs.

Second year:
acquired a 24 year old Jamal Mashburn (who didn't fit,but still a nice pick up)
a 27 year old PJ Brown

a 31 one year old Dan Marjele (still useful)

Conference finals appearance against Chicago

*Nearly acquired Juwan Howard- a premier FA in summer of 96, only for the league to veto the signing claiming tampering.

that team had their run, faded a little bit then
acquired

00
3 time All-Star Eddie Jones

later on drafted

Caron Butler

signed top FA Lamar Odom

drafted Wade

That team had the memorable 7 game series with our own team

flipped Odom/Butler for Shaq

championship.

The guy has built and rebuilt plenty of times(and don't negate his time in New York-that team had Ewing and no other HoF when they went to the Finals). Hating on Ewing shows some lack of knowledge in the area. That dude carried the Knicks from 85-97. Ewing never played with a true second star.

So Riley and Arison have 3 championships with drafting two top 5 picks and Popp/Buford have 4 championships drafting two.

Signing and trading for good players is also a part of team building.

ETA: Riley also discovered Spurs all timer Bruce Bowen.

Yeah.

Those top draft picks don't win titles with the team that drafted them very often . . . they win them after they leave.

WTF are you talking about?

Dwyane Wade has won 3 of them(Beasley was the bust).

The Heat acquire good players and flip them-that's called team building. The Odom/Butler trade was won by Miami.

Sorry. I don't mean Riley's picks only. I mean top draft picks in general.

Wade, Duncan, Darko. That's it among top 5 picks in the lottery era, out of 115 top 5 picks.

Others left and returned, like Kidd, but few.

ETA: Your point is exactly something that is a feather in the cap of Riley and Popp and none others. I was reinforcing the point about assembling teams . . . they go get those draft picks without drafting them.

It seems they keep putting "-42" behind their posts then.

When I use it, I put that. I assumed Cap was talking about me explaining literacy on my own twitter, and him assuming I was talking about people here.

I'm not completely sure what you or him meant, but that is what I was talking about.

quote:

42, Ph.D. ?@42PhD 1h I have spent maybe 30m to 1h of total time explaining basic reading comprehension to people. It's a sad world.

I sarcastically told him to stop subtweeting about us.

So I think I understood you correct.

I don't think anyone knows what that dude is talking about. He's just reaching for insults.

No, not reaching for insults. Just watching you use BBS twitter account to go nuts on people on twitter who disagree with you about Oden (and I only looked for a few minutes).

Gotcha.

Cool story.

Thanks for reading, but maybe you should stop. Or, better yet, pick up a keyboard and EASILY outshine the site, right?

I think he meant referring to TD indirectly, which was not the case. I was talking idiots on twitter. Clearly, I air issues here when I have issues here.

Now I understand what he's made of.

He wants to play for a championship, even if it means sitting on the bench laughing and eating pork rinds. Gimme Gimme Gimme.
Either that or his knees are telling him it may be his only chance to get a ring.

Had he had a stronger more hungry character and integrity, he'd be pretending he's a rookie with
the chance to help turn around an up-and-coming franchise, but no, he's taking the easy way out.

I wish nothing but a certain kind of luck on him.

You seem like a reasonable guy.

He'll play for Miami. He'll play in much more significant games for Miami, health permitting. This isn't a drag on his character.
