Gabriel

I caught glimpses of Gabriel in the bubble last year playing for Portland. He did nothing to really stand out but he kept popping up around the ball (he hustles, blocks out, and gets a lot of rebounds). I thought SVG should have gone to him earlier in the year when our roster was completely out of balance. I'm curious .... What do you all think of his upside?

He is what he is. Stretch big that hustles. Decent bench depth.

I like his hustle, but he tends to play out of control (which leads to a lot of fouls). Nothing more than an end of the bench player IMO.

considering we barely played him at all this year, it's say it was a waste of a signing, and we could have drafted someone in the 2nd round and used that roster spot and minimum contract on the upside of that pick, no matter how small that upside might be b/c even if that person turned into nothing at all, it would have been similar to Wenyen who was a healthy scratch for 50 of the first 58 games we played, with most of those games he played in were garbage time 2-3 minutes
I thought he'd be more useful.

I think the reason he hasn't gotten many minutes is:

but he tends to play out of control (which leads to a lot of fouls).
Per 36 minutes he's averaging 5 fouls. He averaged 6.6 per 36 in Portland. The next closest Pel on the team is James Johnson at 4.1 per 36. This team really doesn't foul.
If Gabriel can get that Per 36 foul rate down to 4 he'll get minutes and be one of the defensive stretch bigs the team needs off the bench. If he can't then the team should have seen his high foul rate as a red flag for fit in Stan's system and not signed him as you suggested.

You got a good look at a (now) 24 year old for $1.6 million and you have a team option for him next year at $1.8m.
Hardly a waste.

You are spot on. At best he is a 4th big. There's nothing wrong with that as he hustles his butt off. I find it very delightful that he is basically a walking foul out once he steps on the court. It is like he is trying to see how fast can he pick up 6 fouls. He's organized chaos and fun to watch run around like a chicken with its head cut off.

You could have had a good look at a 20-23 year old for less money that had more upside, with the same chance of getting nothing out of them, so yeah, mostly a waste.
Nick Richards might have been better. He's not, but no one knew that. The unknown in this case is better than what we've seen from Gabriel in his previous 2 years where he barely ever saw the court with Kings or Blazers.
Could have tried to move up 4 spots, which isn't hard to do, and grab Xavier Tillman or Tyler Bey
Could have taken Jordan Nworo, a 6'8" 40% career 3 point shooter in college, or 6'6" KMart JR who's shooting 40% from 3 this year.
But we are allergic to 2nd round picks.

He does foul a lot although I appreciate a good hack now and then. He was a top 50 player entering college and appears to be comfortable shooting from 3.

Next year he can be that 5th big off the bench.
He should have been getting all the minutes Melli had earlier in the year.

Bruh don’t blame Gabriel for for fricking Stan’s shitty arse rotations. Guy was basically allocating 95% of the minutes between 6 players at the beginning of the year lol. Turns out he was a retard, because we actually had about 6 pretty decent players that he refused to play at all because he was fricking stubborn. Hayes, Naw, Kira, Naji, Billy and Wenyen.
Guy was playing 6 players a game and only calling 2-3 timeouts a game. It was comical, especially now knowing we had a bunch of useable players glued to the bench like they didn’t even belong in the league.

I thought he’s played pretty well these past few games and his 3 point shot looks solid. He will never be more than your 11th or 12th man on the bench but he’s cheap and gives good effort on both ends of the floor even if it’s a little out of control. He reminds me of a former Pel Chiek Diallo with his length and ability to be a 4 or small ball 5 except Wenyen has an outside shot.

Chiek had a little Mutumbo in his game ... No No No

No argument from me with that.
I find it hilarious that multiple idiots would rather sign wenyen Gabriel than make a 2nd round pick.

I think I’d take Wenyen back on a minimum and then either use our 2nd rd in a trade or pick a draft and stash guy. I feel like we have a bunch of decent backups at this point. It really depends on who is available when we pick.
I don’t love Wenyen, but he seems to be high character, is somewhat multipositional, hustles his arse off, and he might be a better shooter than anticipated. I can work with that as a 12th-13th man.
I am with you in regards of how annoying it is that we don’t even try to take swings in the 2nd rd. Time and time again there are useful players found in that round. Why don’t we keep Wenyen and make a 2nd rd pick? Have them compete?
I think our big miss this year was not drafting Bane with our 2nd first or finding a way to trade up and take Bey. That entire Adams deal was a disaster, unless we are giving him credit for Hayes. And I really don’t think that is fair to Hayes. I think he has his own skill development coach on our staff that he shouts out quite regularly in interviews.

I think we are forgetting that Gabriel was hurt to start the year and took I think maybe 6-8 weeks into the season until he was practicing.
I don't really get the attitude that because Gabriel didn't play to start that year, that it means that he sucks. He's not going to start, but it's very possible that he could be the 2nd or 3rd big off the bench next year.
Anyone have any names of G league guys or 2nd rounders from this past year that we missed out on?

I liked when we signed Wenyen, and I love his hustle, but he will never be even a role player at best. He’s literally end of the bench material. I’m not trying to bash Wenyen, like I said I like the guy, just more reiterating how stupid it is that we throw 2nd round picks away for nothing. If your going to sign a minimum guy at the end of the bench, why not take a chance on a draft pick in the 30’s?

We've been over this. It's because:
1) It was a bad year to develop 2nd-round talent, because there was no summer league, a shortened camp, and very limited practice time throughout the season.
2) Griffin wanted to keep all his picks ready for a big trade, which he will probably do now.
But this is really just a thread hijack on your part, because taking a 2nd-round pick wouldn't have affected the Gabriel signing, because most 2nd-round picks don't make the team. If we had drafted someone in the 2nd, we wouldn't have automatically held a roster spot for that person.
A second-round pick is someone that you use a two-way slot on.
[Oh, and I forgot that there wasn't a combine.]

This is absolutely right, imagine for a reason that you exist in a career where you working 5 days or so yields you 1.8 million dollars a year!
