Dumb question of the day: Does Zion start in his 1st games back?

The team is actually playing really well and cohesive ball right now. Zion will improve upon that I think in so many ways, but he will have a learning curve, as will the team playing with him.

On top of that, it is obvious he will be on a heavy minutes restriction at first, and he will not play in back to backs. Load management for the rest of the season.

With that in mind, can you see the benefit of bringing him off the bench, at least at first for a few games?

Let the starters continue to ball out, and then have Zion as one of the first subs off the bench, and allow him to learn and eventually feast versus backups for his 15 or so minutes a game for a little while, also mixing him in with some of the starters. Once you feel he is ready, move him into the starting lineup (Lonzo, Jrue, BI, Zion, Favors).

This has been your stupid mental gymnastics trying to get an argument going post of the day.

Zo
Jrue
Ingram
Zion
Favors

i do worry a bit about our defensive continuity when he gets back but they'll just have to figure it out with time on the court.

No. He will probably only play b/w 10-20 mins his first few games. It would make sense to get his feet wet by playing most those mins against 2nd units

had a conversation the other day about Zion's return. we agreed that Zion's return will likely accompany a dip in production of others. most likely Jrue & BI.

we may have defensive issues when he comes back too, but he'll learn. and I'd bet the learning curve will be quicker if the other 4 players on the court have good continuity

as for OP, I think starting is irrelevant. He'll be on a minutes restriction, we know that. And think it'll be more important to see Zion playing in a lot of different lineups/players.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees the logic in this. I can understand them starting him for sure, for a variety of reasons.

But I also see the value of him coming off the bench for a bit.

i'm not denying a benefit but zion playing with starters takes pressure off of his production. he'll be able to feed off of legit players.

he also needs to get acclimated with the guys he's going to be on the floor with. sooner the better.

Yes solely so he can get a pregame intro. He probably gets subbed at around the 7 minute mark and plays those transition minutes the rest of the game with half starters half second unit. At least that's how I would handle it.

Zion on defense can't be any worse then JJ Redick. Now he might miss a rotation or two but that's normal. As far Jrue and BI's dip in production, I don't see it. Zion isn't a ball dominant player. In a pick and roll situation, the defense is probably gonna rotate to Zion when he rolls which will lead to easier shots for both.

The offense should run through Ingram for the most part anyway.

Whether Zion starts or not, should Zion, BI and Hayes play together a good bit to develop chemistry as they should be the future of our team.

The answer lies in mystery because how he is during practice might shock you.

If hes shawn kemp + charles Barkley then he starts.

If hes

Yes. Regardless of BI's great play so far, this is still Zion's team. BI didn't sell thousands of season tickets. BI doesn't have $100 million in endorsements. Etc.

When it is announced that Zion will play, the SKC will be stuffed to the rafters and those people will be there to see Zion play.

Bringing him off the bench would be too weird.

I actually think it would be insane when he was subbed on a few minutes in. Place would be bonkers.

Yes, how much will he play? TBD

But “Zion May come off the bench tonight”

Does sell tickets like “Zion’s NBA premier be there at Tip off”
