Does Griffin have something up his sleeve that is bigger than we expect?

I know there is alot speculation going on, and we don't have any any insight towards the elites, but is it possible David Griffin has a possible promise from a star willing to come here and sell AD on?

I know Griffin is a confident dude, but he is having waaaay too much BDE about this AD staying stuff. What if a handshake deal with a star agent has already been confirmed and that's his "Blown away" presentation to AD?

I mean the Zion chip alone is a big one. I can't really think of a situation where a team already having a top 5 player got the #1 overall pick with a big time prospect like Zion there.

Cleveland and Wiggins. Fans will value the 1st pick more than the star players.

wiggins wasn't nearly as coveted as Zion. Not even close

Hindsight sure. Wiggins was considered a generational talent at one point. Stars will never value rookies. It usually takes them 3-5 years before they are truly ready to compete. It’s extremely rare to find a Lebron who is ready in year 2.

Sounds like you're expecting AD to stay when he's not. Our only chip is whether or not people want to play with Zion

He will have a plan but won’t sell specific players that will be FAs. He can get popped hard for tampering if it leaks.

Hard to argue AD would be top 6.
harden , giannis , steph, durant , kawhi. lebron...

I don't recall anyone considering wiggins a generational talent

Expecting? Nah.

but just depending on how things are looking for some of AD's preferred destinations I could see him coming around that we're the best basketball situation for him. Crewz's two year extension plan seems reasonable, I don't expect the super max.

I really don’t get the Bradley Beal love on this board. Can someone outline why Bradley Beal is exciting or a difference maker that would help lead to a championship? When I think Bradley Beal, I think top 50 ish type player that is about to make 35m a year plus. That doesn’t excite me in the least.

so you think there is something outside of selling AD on a vision of the future, selling AD on playing with Zion, working with Nelson, being around a highly respected FO, upgrading facilities, & finding a way of getting him his money?

outside of all of that, the only thing that could be up his sleeve is that he has a trade or two in mind and/or thinks he can get certain FAs. but neither of those are things Griff can hang his hat on

At his peak he's top 5, but he's 7 or 8 right now

My thought is if we need to “sell AD” everything that you listed above then he’s not extremely bright. Anyone with a pulse can tell this is a much better winning environment than it was 3 months ago. If AD isn’t begging to stay here and sign the extension, then I cut ties. Griffin shouldn’t have to sell anything. AD just needs to open his eyes and if he cannot do that, that’s fine, bc to me AD is not a player worthy of Supermax money. That money should go to guys who can carry their team and also play more that 65 games a year. Also, the 65 games a year he does “play”, there are always 8-12 of those games where he is in the locker room for a quarter or more with some kind of ailment, so when you truly break it down, AD averages about 55 full games. That is debatably worth 25-30m, and definitely not worth 45-50m. Goodbye AD.

I would put him over Lebron currently. When AD decides he wants to play hard and be the man, he is easily a top 3 player. The problem is that he has those moments few and far between, at least when compared to the other top 5 guy.

Because as everyone knows, this isn't really about any of that stuff.

He does not want to be in New Orleans. He does not want to be in a small market. He does not want to play in a small arena. He does not want to play for a team with a small market share.

He wants to be in a big market, in a big arena, with big endorsement possibilities. That's it.

He was highly thought of going into college because he had elite measurables, by the end though, after a disappointing season, had Parker and Embiid not gotten injured, it had become an open question about who would even go first.

well, for one, AD is not a top 5 player, and he isn't top 5 even at his peak.
If he was he'd be 1st team all NBA every year and his team wouldnt' miss the playoffs 5 out of 7 years.

and the Lakers had Kareem and got the #1 pick, Magic Johnson. 3 years later, they got the #1 pick again, James Worthy
