Do NOT expect Boogie to Sign an Extension

Just talked to someone and basically the Pels will offer an extension but don't plan on having Boogie sign it. Apparently, that extension can only be for 4 more years and would start a shade under 22 mil. Cousins will get way more than that if he just hits FA and re-signs then.

So, don't freak out when he doesn't sign an extension. But the team is very confident that he will sign a max deal the following summer and stay in NOLA.

Can we really not offer the 5 year extension next year? I thought even ESPN reported 5 years and about $175 million or so.

Edit: I mean when he's a FA, not this offseason obviously.

Very realistic. Great post, and needed because people will likely freak out if Boogie doesn't extend right away.

The Pels will be able to offer him 5 for close to $180 on July 1, 2018

This summer, all they could offer him is an extension of 4/98 on top of the 18 he is scheduled to make next year.

So, it makes all the sense in the world for Cousins to hit FA in 2018 and re-sign with us then.

I thought that if he was on the team at the end of the season the Pels could then have exercised the right to offer him the max deal? Is that not correct?

I wanted to make sure people read it so the idiots don't freak out in July. Freak out for a second now, but educate yourself >>> freak out in July and have to re-explain it then.

Wish they would have actually fixed the extensions rules in this new CbA instead of making them less bad.

Also his agent and everyone has said this already. Makes no sense for him financially to extend with any team other than if it was with the Kings. People here were already saying this last night.

That is not correct. I have explained above the options. Hopefully everyone understands them now and doesn't freak out this summer. I know that is expecting a lot, but I can try

If the team flounders next year and underperforms then I doubt he'll re-sign with us. I think we'll be a contender in the playoffs though and he'll be happy to come back

If this team flounders with those three and the pieces they add between now and then, they might not want to give him that money anyway. The roster should be stacked going into next year after they pull off a couple more moves before re-signing Holiday. They better win.

The trade cost him $30 million - 5 yrs. @ $179 million vs. $209 mil for re-signing with Sacramento. Shannon Sharpe is saying that leaving the Pels means $139 mil instead of $179. If that's true, it seems like a no-brainer. No way he leaves another $40 mil on the table after losing $30 mil already.

Do you think a draft night trade of the 2018 pick for a wing is still on the table? Something like 2018 lottery protected pick for Fournier?

Correct. But extension rules only allow him to extend for 4 years, starting at 120% of current salary. So, it makes no sense for him to extend. Makes total sense for him to hit FA and sign massive deal with Pels then

100%. They have to capitalize on Jrue's low cap hold and Cousins small deal ASAP. Here is a piece that should help

I think the Pelicans need to be looking at young cheap role player talent on their next moves. Fournier makes likes $17 million a year.

They don't need to have bigtime pieces since they already have Holiday, Davis, and Cousins.

According to ESPN, the Pels can't offer Cousins as much as the Kings could, but Cousins would give up ~$40million if he signed with anyone else.

However, if some of yall want to look as the glass half empty, if Cousins doesn't resign then it will be the end if Demps. So even the downside isn't that much of a downside.
