“Coach, I can win the game for this team. Leave me in."

—Alvin Gentry on what Zion said before he was subbed out (via @MarcJSpearsESPN)

That's what you love to hear from your star player.

Short clip about Gentry fighting with the medical staff over Zion's minutes.
LINK

And before this turns into more belly aching about the medical staff.

- Jrue had to rehab for an extra year because the team didn't follow doctors orders.
- QPon avoided the medical staff so he could play while injured to help the team make the playoffs and then literally almost died in the hospital.
- After 2 years on the shelf, multiple surgeries and being told he needed another, even more extreme surgery on his knee, Eric Gordon got a 2nd opinion, found a doctor in Chicago that recommended the kind of bio-mechanics, kinetic chain rehabbing that Aaron Nelson is known for, and Gordon started playing about 6 weeks later without getting another surgery.
- During about a 1-2 month span IIRC, Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans and a 3rd player all came back from injury and immediately reinjured what they had just allegedly healed. I'm no doctor but if that happens to 1 guy maybe it's bad luck. Having it happen to 3 guys makes it seem like the players weren't healed and ready to play.

Those are the results we've had in the past when we cared more about short term wins than long term availability. I'm not saying Nelson is perfect, his methods do seem extreme compared to where we've been, but he's exactly the kind of hire we've wanted for quite awhile. Now it's time to trust the process and let him do what he was hired to do.

So we are going from one extreme to the other.

He’s a rook. Love the sentiment but get in shape and don’t get injured. Not our year big man

I agree that it seems extreme and that there should be a more comfortable place in the middle. But Nelson built his sterling reputation by being one of the first to focus on bio-mechanics and is credited with prolonging and rehabbing many star player careers. He has way more credibility than a bunch of arm chair GMs on a message board that google medical conditions. It's been frustrating feeling guys that can help are healthy enough and not playing, but I think we need to give Nelson time to do his thing and see if it gets us what we all said we wanted.

We should play much better against Denver on Friday now that everything’s gotten out of the way with all the hype. We’ll be fine

Exactly. These fools don’t want to hear that though. You’re taking away from their game 45 highlights. Who cares about changing the culture of our team’s medical care, a history that’s NEVER worked for us in the past. They want it now. These guys would have LOVED Demps.

Zion proved we have the best young talent in the league. Put him with Hayes, Ball, Ingram and NAW and the potential is incredible. It is going to be fun to watch them grow.

Whatever... What was supposed to happen if he played the last 5 minutes? Really is that a f****** joke? In general I get it but come on.. at that point you've already gone there. he couldn't play the last five f****** minutes? what would happen? what would really f****** happen? he rips a f****** ligament? Jesus Christ.. make an exception.... Oh no he might get fatigued...! I'm sure you're very proud of your informative post that's acceptable on the rant.....

Change the way they utilized those minutes last night and we walk away with this imo.

Instead of disrupting the starting lineup and putting Zion in the most difficult situation out the gate, you put him in toward the end of the first with the second unit, again in the second quarter. Toward the end of the third and then later in the second unit of the fourth.

I genuinely don’t think the starting unit struggles as bad as they did spending so much time trying to adjust and work around Zion being dropped in there. I don’t think Zion stays shell shocked nearly as long getting his feet wet against backups as opposed to starters. Could have played more at the five where we saw him explode in confidence and output. Where his mistakes would have been less costly and his impact a more steadying hand.

Hope Gentry learns that lesson and we see a different utilization strategy next game.

What happen to KD? Don’t you think they wish they would’ve been more cautious with him returning from his injury? Yea more than likely nothing happens and Zion is fine after playing but I like the fact that they went into to game with a plan and stuck to it.

You can’t compare KD to Zion. A strained, partially torn Achilles on a 31 year old 7 footer is completely different than a post meniscectomy 19 year old. This team has proven to be very, very poor at handling the PR around Zion’s injury.

We have been told by Griffin and Al that there would be no minutes restriction after we have watched Zion throw down hammer dunks and go through full pre game workouts for at least the last month. He was obviously on a strict, 15-16 minute limit restriction last night as that as when Gentry sent Melli to the table. This puts the team and Zion in a very uncomfortable place moving forward. There is being smart about an injury and then being overly cautious. Last night was a perfect example of being overly cautious and another poor job of handling the public relations side by the Pels.

My biggest gripe: dont lie and say no minutes restriction. They yanked him during a "spurt" where he looked good. Why? Because he exceeded their minute cap.

This is game 45 v the Spurs. A win gets them to 9 games under .500 and closer to the right to lose in 5 v the 1 seed.

But by all means, let's not trust the professional medical staff in charge of taking care of the most important player for the next decade of the franchise.

It's a shame players like Paul, Davis, and now Zion are wasted on such a dumb fansbase.

How does this put the team in uncomfortable position? Obviously they all agreed on a plan and stuck to it. WTH are you even talking about? it's amazing cause if something would have happen to him last night then you would be the same guy on here screaming about how stupid the Pels are for rushing him back and making him play too much. Not to mention the fact that he is no where near playing shape--the Pels have been riddled with injuries throughout--I'm glad we are finally putting prevention at the forefront and thinking long term.

At this time he isn’t in shape to play extended minutes. When someone is tired they have a better chance of getting injured or re injuring something. Work him back slowly and let him have the entire offseason healthy to get in tip top shape.

I was pissed about pulling him last night, but is it being overly cautious if you don't care about the outcome of a regular season game and are instead focused on the process of bringing him back slowly and in a way that prioritizes his future health, or is it just the smarter move?

I dont think you can be overly cautious with a player like Zion. He is going to be the most exciting player in the league for years. They need to focus on the future not the present with him.

Correct, we are not winning it all this year....

When we are a perennial powerhouse in a couple of year this point in time can be pointed out about doing the best thing for Zion today. But was a glimpse of things to come...

Someone has never rehabbed an injury before. You lose a ton of strength and flexibility, and are 10 times more likely to get injured for a decent amount of time afterwards. There is a reason why doctors have a plan to slowly work athletes back into full workload. 5 minutes absolutely matters in this case. Your melt is due to your ignorance, not anyone's wrong doing.
