Charlotte in process to rebrand to Hornets (starting 2014-15; presser Tues.)

The Charlotte Bobcats are in the process of changing their name back to "Hornets," a source with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com's Will Brinson, including arranging digital assets that would allow a return to their original nickname.
There is no timetable for the switch though NBA commissioner to be Adam Silver told Bobcats season ticket holders in April that such a change would take at least 18 months to implement. Moreover, the change is not unexpected and would likely be popular with the North Carolina fan base.

Silver told season ticket holders re-acquiring the name "Hornets" would not be an issue, stating that the NBA and not the Pelicans owned the moniker.

Good for them. That name really does have a lot of culture and history surrounding it; it just wasn't NOLA related.

The way it should be IMO.
Just like with the Jazz.

You serious, bro?
quote:
The Hornets nickname in Charlotte dates back to the Revolutionary War, when British General Charles Cornwallis compared the resistance in Charlotte to a hornet’s nest. It has been used in sports by a minor league baseball team (1901-73), an upstart football league team (1974-75) and the city’s first NBA franchise.
LINK
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police use a hornets nest as their logo. Saying "hornets" has no significance in Charlotte would be as dumb as saying "jazz" has no significance to New Orleans.

whoa, not sure if true, Benson bought the Hornets then rebranded.
If Silver says is true then the NBA owns all names.

Okay, point stands. Charlotte has no culture. Yogurt turns into milk in that city.

No. Benson bought the "New Orleans Hornets." The league owned the name "Charlotte Hornets." All of the Charlotte throwback merchandise profits went to the league. The New Orleans franchise never saw a dime of that.
