Only way he "disappears" is if he falls off the cliff on defense. Based on what I saw, he can hold his own for the most part. His IQ is good overall so no he's not going anywhere and will continue to be in the rotation.

They literally signed him 3 days before game day and was only going to give him 4 minutes and he ended up playing 13 while being our highest +/- on the team last night.

His game naturally fits in this offense, it's easy to see why they keep him on the floor.

I’m honestly shocked that Willie played a 2-way guy real minutes in the first game of the season after he was signed literally 3 days ago

Zion attacking middle while the Pelicans use their non shooters to screen for their shooters to occupy the help. I used to pray for times like this!
That screenshot is exactly where Zion should start his play.

I know JJJ isn't on the floor but even if he was, that's how you use JVal. If JJJ wants to sag off of him to help on Zion, then Val sets the screen for a shooter, in this case, CJ and there is no help for him. So if Val sets a good screen, which he usually does unless he gets called for the moving screen lol, it's a wide open 3 for CJ every single time.

I totally get what you are saying. My ignorance leads me to the question, why was he cut or not on another roster? Thats why I question his sustainability.

1. He's 29. He was on a Minnesota's two way contract. Teams like to use two way contracts on young guys. He isn't going to be a major player for any team he's on. But He's good at what he does and there's no ceiling as a player. He is what he is as player.

For us, he is exactly what we need. A plug and play shooter who you can slot in and out of the lineup when there's a need for shooting.

What I didn't realize he was able to do until I saw it yesterday was his ability to relocate and find creases in a small area. Then I didn't know he had that shooter's mentality makeup. If theres daylight, he's letting it go with no hesitation whatsoever. Something a lot of our roleplayers lack.

Once we get healthy, he will still be a valuable asset since we can really do some damage with Trey and Ryan on opposite sides of the court spacing for Zion.

The Pelicans are extremely lucky to get him. I was really worried about our spacing and shooting from our role guys while Trey is out but Ryan really eased my concerns.

Yea, I honestly don't know a single thing about Ryan's defense, but it's a fair assumption it's pretty bad.

A 38% sharp shooter who plays just average defense is going to be making ten figures per year, not getting a 2-way contract 3 days before the season starts.

I will say last night I thought he played ok defense- even had a block plus he showed some playmaking as well with pass to jonas off dribble. Im hoping sometimes guys just need minutes and a shot on a team to develop and be better. With Trey out till November/December Ryan will get that shot.

He was basically a rookie last year and played for two teams in a limited role. I don't think he really played enough to warrant anything more than a 2 way or a minimum contract.

It was an all around solid performance. Hope it portends more of it going forward.

AD said on multiple broadcasts last year that the pels need to go find a player that can shoot, it doesn't even matter if they can dribble, they just need to be able to shoot.

He's right. Find a player that a team has to stay on to keep a guy out of the middle and if they do leave him, he makes them pay.

Everything we do should be about spacing.

I really don't understand why no other teams wanted him. He's 6'9" and can shoot.

The Heat gave Duncan Robinson $90 million for being tall and able to shoot.

Honestly most nba teams have a lot of shooters. We’re kind of the outlier- we just don’t have a ton of pure shooters.

Yeah if we can replace Kira and Naji's spots with shooters that would go a long way. I like Naji but with dyson and herb, his skill set is redundant
