Upvote: Rim Protection/Center

Downvote: Shooting

Both have to be priorities but you have to choose one for this thread.

For me I think I’ve changed my mind on this: it’s upgrading Jonas to someone that can protect the rim and move. Last night it was so apparent that was a massive weakness for us.

The 4 spot was the main problem . Willie should have played Jax more tonight.

This seems like Center has been a problem for the majority of the time that the NBA had been in New Orleans. I hope the Pels can do it before the window closes with what we have.

Turns out Deandre Ayton isn't actually Wilt Chamberlain. The answer is rim protection.

Its not just rim protection though. Its a big that won't be chewed up by a pick and roll.

Shooting should still be a priority though. It covers up a lot deficiencies. You can watch Boston have nothing on a possession, then somebody drives and kicks to an open shooter. There's nothing brilliant about it. They just put at least 4 shooters out there at all times. Robert Williams is the only non shooter on the whole squad, and they just added Muscala as another stretch 5, for giggles.

For playoff purposes, stops will be more of an issue for this team, though. We'll score enough.

Zion's game makes the right center more difficult to find though.

extend this to suggest who and realistic how you get him.

as someone posted yesterday on this topic, the other team is not oblidged to do your deal if you say jv and 2 2nds for denvers jokic.

I don't even think the rim protector has to be the starter. I like being one of the few teams with a skilled 7 footer that can score in the post.

The problem is, when we need stops, it can't all be on Larry's shoulders. When there was quick talk about Willy going to Chicago, I thought a Willy/Drummond swap would've been solid for us.

Both...solution? During off-season somehow pick up Robin Lopez cheaply to sit on end of the bench...but first, tell Robin to tell his brother, Brook (ufa) not to re-sign with the Bucks but to sign with Pels for about $20M/yr for a coupla years. Then promise the brothers they will both be on the court when the horn sounds and the Pels win the NBA championship next year. Be the FIRST & ONLY time that will ever happen, in the NBA...so should be an easy sell.

PS: Find some way to come up with the money to pay Brook $20M/yr

Rim protection. If healthy the shooting can improve organically. There is no rim protection on this team even when healthy and playing well.

I have no ideas how to get it.

this may be totally correct but it feels like settling.

I'll be the contrarian and go with shooting which was a major problem during that recent losing streak where some starters, scab-starters and nomally-reliable role players couldn't match opponent scoring while BI and Zion, and even CJ, were out.

It's one of the reasons I wanted Mathurin slightly over Dyson in the draft. The Pels will always have a primary scorer(s) miss enough games that adding another shooter/scorer will likely get a season's worth of starter minutes in order to replace those missing points. The Pels ridiculous injury-to-recovery history is exhibit A that you can't have enough shooters.

This shouldn't be contrarian at all.

We have 3 shooters and one of them (BI) doesn't really hunt for 3's. You need more than that in this NBA.

I had to look it up out of curiosity.

Mathurin is shooting .321 from 3

League average is .360

#1 Priority should be getting Derek Lively in the draft. We desperately need a mobile big who can block shots and affect the game in the paint cus opposing teams get too many easy shots near the basket. Fill rest of roster with 3 point shooters

I'd have to say BI actually hunts 2's. Hopefully, when/if he & Zion are on the court at the same time, BI will use the opportunity to drift outside & take quite a few more 3s.

We "spot" our opponents enough of an advantage with our terrible defense at the "5"...so we don't need to make it worse by also spotting them an advantage in 3-pt shooting, if we can help it. BI is a solid 3-pt shooter & needs to average about 6 3-pt shots per game...when Zion returns.
