I can think of a few more "Chapel Hill" type bands that should've been bigger.

Flat Duo Jets
Archers of Loaf
The dBs
Southern Culture on the Skids

Probably could add Corrosion of Conformity too.

I'm a huge fan of Norwegian and Swedish black metal.

This thread/post could take my whole day away.

So I'm just going to say Dissection..and also being louisiana biased, i have to say acid bath.

2. Built to Spill - Popular, but this band should be as popular as a band like Radiohead.

this. they are amazing. I think the problem is that they are album rock and its not an album rock era. I actually think they get their due as they tour non stop and alwasy sell out their shows.

While not all obscure, they have varying degrees of lack of credit:

Archers of Loaf
Crowded House
The Smithereens
Dressy Bessy
Dag Nasty
Shudder to Think
David Mayfield Parade
Fishbone
The Muffs
The Germs

I agree that they are successful, but they are selling out small clubs. I still feel they should be on the level of success of a band like Radiohead, yet Radiohead is astronomically more successful.

What does this term mean?
quote:

Album-oriented rock (abbreviated AOR) is an American FM radio format focusing on album tracks by rock artists. AOR evolved from progressive rock radio in the mid-1970s, using research and formal programming to create an album rock format with greater commercial appeal.

I read that, but still trying to make sense of it. So does album rock mean that a piece of music plays better as a whole album rather than just individual tracks or singles.

Wouldn't Radiohead fit into that genre? I mean, who listens to individual tracks on Kid A or OK Computer, two of their most popular albums. Sure, you have Karma Police, Creep, and 15 step, but I'd still consider them an album rock band.

Hell, I would have at least respected Bronski Beat, Communards or Erasure.
