Jimi Hendrix opening for The Monkees is the craziest one I've heard of.
Video of Hendrix jamming and flicking his tongue at shocked teenaged girls who were waiting to see the Monkees is hilarious.
Any other odd pairings you've heard of?

Promoters back in the day used to book shows like that.

The Grateful Dead opened for Miles Davis once

edit: Miles Davis opened up for the Grateful Dead before they because huge still shocking.

Drake opening for Ozzy and Slayer opening for Outkast both at Voodoo. As far as tours, Jada Pinkett Smith's band on Ozzfest a year after they opened for Britney Spears was pretty bad.

Snoop and RHCP is an odd one. I didn't go, but would have liked to.

Yeah you're right. Even stranger, as the Dead were still gaining momentum at that point.

miles was getting tired of jazz clubs and wanted to play rock venues (slightly bigger crowds, different vibe, etc). Bill graham booked him at his SF venues for several shows, and the dead specifically requested to be on a bill with miles as they were fans

as the story is told the dead were pretty sheepish when they found out miles was opening for them instead of the other way around. Miles was in his sketches of Spain/bitches brew phase at the time

You can't really use festival lineups. That's cheating, especially Voodoo's incompetent monkey arse.

That's the whole point. You don't see JazzFest putting two vastly different bands back to back on the same stage. If you're gonna do a multi genre festival, at least have different genres on different stages.

Yeah, you're also kind of misrepresenting though what actually occurred. Drake then Street Sweeper Social Club opposite then Ozzy. SSSC is actually about as smooth a transition from Drake to Ozzy as you can get.

I went to that show in Bossier. Was definitely an odd show. Snoop had like 18 guys on stage and they were just rollin & smokin blunts the whole time. I honestly can't even remember any of the music. RHCP we're good as always though

There are definitely worse pairings in the grand scheme, but these are a few I saw first-hand:

Krokus opening for Rush; St. Pete, FL '82...I had the misfortune of seeing Krokus TWO more times after that, also as openers. I couldn't get away from them, it seemed lol

The Who, Joan Jett, and the B-52s; Orlando, FL '82...the openers didn't stand a chance that evening.

I don't know if our student govt put this together, or if they were actually touring together, but I remember going to a free show with the Sugarcubes, Godfathers, and Living Colour in the late 80's. No one had heard of Living Colour yet (not for another couple of months), but they pretty much stole the show, so much that by the time the Sugarcubes hit the stage, most everyone in the crowd had bolted. Definitely a musical mismatch...

Scorpions and Bon Jovi; Lakeland, '84 or '85...probably doesn't seem like such a radical pairing now, but it sure seemed weird back then.

The best musician to ever pick up an instrument (Prince) opened for the Rolling Stones a couple times back in the late 70s. That was an odd pairing.
