MTV and a shotgun in the mouth made Nirvana. Just another depressed rockstar junkie whose legacy benefited from an early death.
That's another issue. Has nothing to do with this topic.

adio payola and huge record companies were still capable of creating hits. Music today isn't driven by a monopolistic industry that can make or break artists and trends. Digital killed all that.

False. Terrestrial radio, record labels, tv stations, movie studios, promoters, distributors, etc are more consolidated than ever. While streaming allows bands to “do it themselves” more than in the past to achieve up to ancertain level of success, becoming a part of the pop culture landscape is actually much MUCH harder without big boy backing than ever before. Chance the Rapper is the exception, not the rule. Now that the big boys have started taking over streaming playlisting, it’s getting harder and harder, not easier.

If sony wants a hit, it’s a hit tomorrow.

I thought Nirvana was much bigger while he was alive.. I dont think history has been all that kind to their legacy.. All I seem to hear from people is they are over rated.. Which I totally disagree with..

I remember loving Bleach so much and when Nevermind came out, at first I was kind of taken a back from the polish on the record and I hated the cover art.. But the songs were still great! I would never have guessed Smells Like Teen Spirit was about to blow up after the first few listens.. though I assumed the singles would get more push, since they were now on Geffen...

Still, to this day, I have never liked Come As You Are...

Every bit of this is my exact sentiments.

I remember seeing Bleach in a record store and commenting, "Hey look. A band named after a Cult song." Listened to it and thought, not bad. I'm not a huge Nirvana fan but they did change things literally in a 3 month span. I remember seeing a video around Halloween and by Christmas, it was huge.

The momentum for change or getting away from the excess of hair bands was building and Nirvana was the band that toppled everything.

I would hope something would come along again like that but the outlets for music now is so great I'd find it hard to do.

They are overrated, but that has little to do with and doesn't change the affect that one song had on music.

I always get sucked into the Nirvana rockumentaries because it really was a shift (grunge etc) and set the tone for the better part of a decade.

We are about due for another such rock renaissance...

Teen Spirit was terrible but I get what you mean. Yes I think it’s possible but I’m not sure if it’ll be quite like grunge. Most music on the radio is highly focus group tested and manufactured but the occasional oddity gains enough traction to surface. The underground scene is vibrant and creates all sorts of sounds that have the potential to take hold. So yes, I think it’s possible, likely even. But it won’t be like the 90s though.

Hard to imagine, honestly.

The fact that people no longer congregate in "one place" to consume music is a major factor in a discussion such as this. For example, in 1991, everyone in the world had either their local radio station or MTV to consume new music. When something hit on both of those avenues, it was "easy" for a song or an act to really become a worldwide thing sort of overnight.

Now, everyone consumes music so differently, and it's difficult to imagine pop culture shifting back to where rock music, instead of hip-hop/pop, is king. Furthermore, it's also difficult to see one song initiating any sort of movement or shift in the music landscape like SLTS did. Again, I think that's because everyone's listening habits are so all over the map these days, it's difficult to see one song getting that much traction, and that's sort of regardless of genre.

The future of rock music in general being this big again? That's a whole different conversation.

In years past, this has been true. You could point to a handful of songs that were pop hits that were outside of the "pop sound" of the moment.

2018 was the first year where it is almost impossible to find one of those outliers. Piano and low-key, atmospheric "beats" in every single song. Find me a guitar or a real drum anywhere.

2018 was the worst year in pop music history. Bar none.

This is a perfect comment. The mentality that doesn't understand that the question here has nothing to do with liking or disliking that song in particular and everything to do with the cultural impact and shift that happened at that time... also doesn't see the appeal of one of the best rock bands ever.

As always, I feel more confident holding Nirvana up as one of my favorite bands after observing the caliber of intellect that dislikes them. It never fails.

If Greta Van Fleet can't do it, we are doomed .
They are awesome but I just heard about them on SiriusXM they are awesome. , there's no central point for curating music anymore, it's too fractured to be like the MTV days, no more gatekeepers
