I have heard this band mentioned many times on this board but I have never listened to any of their stuff. What is a good album to listen to as a starter? Who are they similar to? Thanks.

And then go to A Ghost is Born

Everything before those two is also pretty good

The mermaid sessions are great as well, with billy bragg doing woody guthrie songs. I like all wilco though.

It really depends on if you're coming from a folk, country POV or an indie rock POV.

YHF is a classic, imo. Listen to that.

Being There, YHF, and A ghost is born are three incredible albums. The others are awesome too.

One of my favorite bands.

I would rank them as follows:

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Summerteeth
A Ghost Is Born
Being There
Wilco (The Album)
Sky Blue Sky
The Whole Love
AM

I don't think they've released a bad album ever, but they do change a lot over the years. AM is pretty alt country and every album after gets less so. But I'm a bit partial, top 5 bands on my list.

Sidenote: Because they've changed so much over the years they make for a really good Pandora station. Bunch of indie, alt country and classic Zeppelin pops up.

Also and amazing live band if you ever get the chance.

They have changed the band members (only Tweedy and Stirratt remain) over the years and with it, their sound...

I would suggest starting at the beginning with AM, which isnt a big departure from the country-ish tunes Tweedy was writing with Uncle Tupelo.

Being There (my personal favorite) sees him really stepping out from Jay Farrar's shadow and coming into his own and having a better vision of where he's taking the band... still rootsy..

From there, they start veering more towards the poppier side of things with the next couple of records...

After YHF, is when you really start seeing the band as it is today, Jay Bennett (major creative force) left and Nels Kline is brought in... Now they've kind of evolved into a very eclectic sound thats very experimental... You can see all the new member's, over the years, influence..

That said, to some degree they've always kept atleast one toe in the rootsier side of things...
