Perfect example, “The Heart Won’t Lie.” Duet between Vince Gill and reba McEntire. It’s a really good song, but the video is ridiculous. She’s in Navy Boot Camp or something and he is her harsh instructor. I remember one scene where he’s yelling at her while she is running through the mud in the rain at night. Even as a kid, I thought it was pretty dumb.
Shania Twain was a poltergeist and the only one who could see her was the dog

You’re welcome.
Did you ever wonder why the boat at the intro sounded like a Harley?
The producer, Kieth Stegal, recorded his own bike taking off in the alley by the studio and put it on the record.

I know the song, but I’m putting one of my kids to bed so my speakers are off. I strongly invite anyone to skip to this point but turn off your speakers. It makes this part that much delightfully bizarre.
The shadowboxing clowns give the little girl a premonition that her mom is getting slapped around and her house is about to burn down and everybody dies is the takeaway

I imgune that's exactly how it unfolded at the pitch meeting to Martina.
Further, from Wikipedia: LINK
quote:
In the video, a daughter (Heidi Butler Prine) recalls a tragic incident she experienced as a child. Her mother (Darcie Jones) was involved in a domestic abuse incident with her alcoholic father (Aaron Wrench). On Independence Day, the daughter walks to the town fair and hears rumors going on about the father's abuse. Apparently the whole town knew about the abuse, but did nothing to help stop it. That day, the mother burns down their house, presumably with the husband and herself inside it, and the daughter is sent to a county home. The music video was produced by American director team Deaton-Flanigen Productions, consisting of William Deaton III and George Flanigen IV, and premiered on CMT on May 20, 1994.

It's funny you mention this. I went back recently and checked out the song 'Morning Desire' by Kenny Rogers only because I read that Stanley Jordan did the guitar solo. It's from 1985 but still
But man....the video is so lame. Wants to bang the wife but he has to go feed the horses in the rain.

Tons of videos from all genres had the direct to camera "stare down" back in the 90s.

But while pop and rock artists were getting million-dollar budgets to shoot cinematic masterpieces on 35mm film, country labels were notoriously cheap with video production.
I’m going to guess that MTV‘s ratings were much higher than CMT‘s
