I did, and I don't see what is stopping you.
Finding new music is a lot harder than it used to be, for me at least. But its out there. You just have to sift through the noise. Pitchfork is a great resource for that, there best new music is usually really good.
Now the problem I have is that I go to the shows, and I am old enough to be the father of almost everyone there.

Sure, but you were the one who said you should just have it pop up on your radio if its being marketed right. And that just hasn't been true for most of rock music's history. It's always required scouring the back pages of magazines or just finding a label you trust and buying stuff from them sight unseen.

There's always been stuff outside the traditional music industry, though the majors have bought interest in the biggest indies for distribution purposes. But with the internet, smaller labels don't need the majors distribution any more. And SST and Dischord did just fine breaking bands nationally while being wholly independent. To take it outside of punk, many metal acts were able to sell a lot of copies without any radio airplay whatsoever.

and I think its much much easier. Music review sites are everywhere, you can sample albums on spotify or pandora, and you can buy the album directly from the band or their label. I think its incredibly easy to discover new bands compared to when I was younger. This is much better.

I prefer the situation now. There is so much you have to sift through a lot of stuff. its almost too easy to check out a new band.

NPR ran a story that it is literally impossible to hear all of the new music. Which is kind of cool, but once you accept you can't hear everything, it takes the pressure off to "keep up". You hear what you hear. You like what you like.
