Why do i have a gut reaction of hate to most music nowadays?

I find myself hating a song, like most of them by FUN for example, then i listen to them a few times and i start to like them and i realize i probably shouldnt have hated them in the first place.

I feel the same way initially, but then forge ahead...

I just dont get it. I try to remain open, and i suppose that's why i listen to them a few times, FUN is the best example of this. I fricking hated that band the first time i heard all there songs. Seriously, hated every song. And the singer. Now i have the CD.
I do wish they'd put more guitar in their songs. And i think that is the essence of my problem. I love the way a guitar sounds, not enough bands use them effectively nowadays. And I dont mean long solos and i dont mean grunge, and i dont mean loud, and i dont mean distortion, i just mean effectively. It is very hard to do, and harder to explain. There are too few people in this world and in this new music who can master a guitar it seems.

Ive never even heard of them until the past few weeks reading this board... doesnt sound like I'll check 'em out.

I'm the same for the most part. Most new music doesn't do it for me because they all incorporate electronics it seems. Don't get me wrong though, some of the songs can be catchy, but I'd rather listen to a band actually playing and that has musical talent. Could be me just being close minded, but IDGAF. I'd rather listen to my iPod than the radio any day.
Are they that good? The only song I know from them is that "We are young" song that gets overplayed at bars every night.

I guess after being pushed into your brain in bars, radio, tv, and film you eventually start to recognize what's there and buy into it.
Personally, I wish I would have been the age I am now during the 90's. I think I would have felt a lot younger because I would have certainly gotten into new music, unlike today. I have tried to give new bands a chance not to fit the stereotype of being old. But man, the music industry doesn't really give me much of a chance. I'm hoping a renaissance comes again like it did in the 90's pushing all the bullshite out the way and allowing for a creative explosion for a good decade.

I wish I could've experienced the music of the '60s and '70s first hand.
Damn, I wish I could've gone to The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and many more concerts.
Music just isn't the same anymore, simple as that.

I would literally give anything for this chance. Anything. Music isnt the same anymore, i agree. But im trying to separate that from being a bad thing in my head.

I struggle with this question daily. They do seem to be better than most of the bullshite out there today, but does that make them good? I dunno. The lead singer has a bunch of energy and i like his voice, they are only on like there second album. They are 4 years old and released there first CD in 09, so they are young. They've got potential. I find it so fricking hard to find a band with potential nowadays. They do have a drummer, bassit, guitarist, and lead singer, and they all play their instruments. That's a plus. And i cant say i hate it when people integrate electronics, it just has to be done right. I mean i have 6 pedals, my other guitarist has more, my bassist has 2, my drummer messes with an electronic set sometimes. But it can be cheesy or over done or done wrong. Muse is one of my favorite current bands, they mix electronic shite with instruments exceptionally well.
tl;dr version:
They are better than most out there, does that make them good? Who knows, but they've got potential.

Well it isnt the same. That is not arguable at all. But that doesnt necessarily mean it is worse. If you want to listen and experience music like classic rock, you have to go to music festivals, because the great bands in that genre are never playd on the radio or anywhere else, and they rarely get their own venues. They tour the festival circuit. And i love outdoor music festivals, so thats not a bad thing. But music is very different now. Very different. Every part of the music industry is different. Shitty music has been around forever, and it still is. It just seems the crap is leading the pack right now. But there is good music out there if you look for it.

The music that is coming out nowadays is absolutely incredible. The sheer variety, and the ability to find new music just completely boogles my mind.
The internet has completely changed the face of music.
To find stuff you like, you have to work at it. The shite they play on the radio is just plain awful. But there is more good new music coming out now than there was 20 years ago. Its truly astounding how good it is.
I am going to guess your problem is you like the familiar and not the new, thus your love for classic rock. Classic rock has some great stuff in it, but it wasn't the golden age of music that everyone thinks it was.
The mid to late 90s was a cesspool of music, as radio had been ruined but the internet for music was in its infancy. But the last 5 years or so, the music just keeps getting better and better.

in the 70s, you know what the dominant radio play was? Disco and light rock.
There was more rock played back then but its not like you were going to turn on the radio and hear kashmere.

it was the golden age of guitar heavy drum heavy rock and roll music. Which is an amazing art form near impossible to replicate today. Not to many people can hold a candle to the bands of the classic rock genre, certanily not much of what is considered "rock" today, but that is because music evolves, and it has evolved, there is nothing wrong with that.

right. I agree. To find good music you have to search for it. I dont really know why you have such a sharp edge to your posts

Yeah politics is out of control in this country. I try keep my obnoxiousness contained to the OT and my beloved Saints Talk. I never venture over there. Too much stress, anger, and hate. I come to the music board for a laid back discussion of music. I picture this place as the back room in a record store. All music is debated, and you might throw some insults or say you hate some things, but raising your voice or getting to bent out of shape just seems out of place considering the atmosphere.

yeah, I have posted on quite a few message boards and this one is quite strange in that. Anything goes on several boards it appears, but several are really different.
Its hard to keep that straight, but I will try.

You said it yourself that music has changed.
No band today can compete with the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, CCR, The BAND, Allman Brothers. The list goes on.

You don't need to stereotype me at all cause my favorite genre is Classic Rock.
I like new music and actually have a hipster side when it comes to Indie music nowadays. However, the majority of music that's produced today is generic pop bullshite. I mean GANGNAM STYLE is the most popular song right now. What the frick does that say about the state of music today?
Posted on 12/13/12 at 11:04 am to buddhavista
quote:I'll play along. Not at all. My problem is that I am a musician by nature (drummer) and have played in bands, wrote songs, and basically lived a rock and roll lifestyle (much like the Cake song) growing up. I say that not to be a music snob, but to offer just a tad bit of credibility in this debate that I know what the hell I'm talking about. I'm not just a grumpy old guy who wants to listen to the 90's music for the rest of his life and call everything else crap. I love new stuff. And there are a few bands and side projects that have come out since that I get into. But the volume of what I consider "good" stuff (personal opinion) is way less than what is was, say, 10 years ago. I know it's not just me because I've had this conversation with so many people it's not funny and we all tend to agree.
I am going to guess your problem is you like the familiar and not the new,
If anything, it's the younger generation that gets their panties in a wad as though people like me and the OP are attacking you personally and the achievements of your generation's music writing ability. It's not that at all. This tone should simply come across as "tighten up", not "you suck".
quote:And this is where the music industry fails at it. It shouldn't be that way. If a label is doing the right marketing, it should be known according the radio genre you listen to. It shouldn't have to be scouring some back pages to stumble across something.
To find stuff you like, you have to work at it.
quote:This statement wreaks of troll.

And to the others, I wish I could have been alive during the 60's and 70's as well. I would give my right ball to have watched The Doors play a show on acid, and smoked a few bowls during a Led Zeppelin show.
