I agree that most radio stuff is just horrible. But that was the case in the 70s too.

Sure there was a lot of good music coming out then, but it wasn't stuff people were listening to broadly. Although many of those bands were doing stadium tours back then, but there are a lot of good bands doing stadium tours now too.

Everyone has different opinion on what is good and bad, but what is coming out now is better than 10 years ago IMHO. And better than 15 years ago too.

I am a complete and total music snob fwiw, I just think the new stuff coming out now is just incredible and really blurring boundaries, and pushing things in new ways.

I am going to bet that I am older than you. I came off a little strong, and I shouldn't have. But I don't think you suck, I just get really sick of the meme that new music sucks. It doesn't, its really really good. In fact, I think outside of the late 80s/early 90s shoegaze stuff that hit, this is the best music of my lifetime.

This was Grateful Dead's MO. They would give out their albums for free to get people to come buy tickets for their show and eventually buy shirts and all that. They were brand experts. In an economics class I took, we actually had a discussion about them doing this.

what is interesting is that at the end of the 80s, jerry garcia said he was broke and didn't make anything off those tours.

well you aren't going to find another merle haggard or allman brothers. Just as you won't find another white stripes.

But those styles of music are still around. And still popular. You can find something that has a sound along those lines.

IMO I think Rap has a ceiling, and met it a long time ago. There is only so much you can do with rap. It's rhymes, it's beats, it's hooks... there really has been nothing that has come out in years that I have been blown away from. I appreciate the talent and good lyrics, and I love when there is a good hook. There is just only so much you can do in this.

i disagree, I really like how raps are dropped into different types of music. I know blondie did this 30 years ago, but Phedre does that in what I would consider a twee album. And I think that is unique.

I graduated high school in 1992. I think you misunderstood what I typed. I meant that now, at age 39, I wish I could still get into the new stuff like I did all during my 20's. It kept me younger that way.

Live rap almost always has a band. But overall the genre has peaked to me, I am bored with it. Never liked it much to begin with, outside of a few, but it has become a joke as of late.

I don't know about a ceiling, but I think it has peaked. Albums like Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die, Doggstyle(whatever snoop's first album was called), 36 Chambers, Illmatic, etc will never be topped.

I think rap is kind of moving in a different direction in terms of having a softer more melody like sound (i don't know musical terms but i think you get what i'm saying). Two of the better, recent albums My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Good Kid M.a.a.d. City, had a lot more "music" and singing, but it wasn't queer like when Drake does it.
